Rowan Goes 1-1 On Final Day at Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast Tournament

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Rowan University softball team went 1-1 on the final day of the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast Tournament. Rowan defeated Salisbury University, 3-0 and lost to Lynchburg College, 3-2.

Versus Salisbury (2-1), pitcher Jackie Sasko (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) had a complete game shutout. She only allowed four hits, while striking out four batters. Stacey Davis (1-1) took the loss for the Seagulls.

Rowan was led by second baseman Jenna DiDonato (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) with one hit (three at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a home run. Left fielder Casey Roselle (so. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) added a solo home run. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) went one for two with one run scored.

The Profs scored all three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Roselle put Rowan ahead, 1-0 with her homer. Brenner reached base with a single and DiDonato drove her home with a home run.

In the loss to Lynchburg (4-1), pitcher Katie Bruce (4-0) threw seven innings, allowing two runs. She recorded six strikeouts. For Rowan (1-3), Amanda Singer (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/E. Brunswick) pitched 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits. She struck out four batters. Sasko tossed the final 1.2 innings, striking out three hitters.

DiDonato posted two hits (three at bats). Designated player Lisa Benedetti (so. Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) went one for two with one RBI and a double. Right fielder Heidi Smith (jr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) contributed with two hits in four at bats and one RBI.

Lynchburg got on the scoreboard with a solo home run by shortstop Taylor Walker in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rowan took a 2-1 advantage with two runs in the top of the fifth. Benedetti’s double plated first baseman Nicki Veneziano (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield). Smith’s ground out brought DiDonato home. In the bottom half, Lynchburg catcher Meagen Fredenberg hit a single that scored left fielder Lauren Duguay. First baseman Tara Campbell followed with a single knocking in Fredenberg.

Rowan travels to the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL on Saturday-Friday, March 14-20. The Profs will play 10 games during the trip.
