VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Rowan University softball team opened the 2009 season at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast Tournament on Friday. Rowan lost to Christopher Newport University, 3-2 and Roanoke College, 3-0.
The two-day tournament continues on Saturday. Rowan plays Salisbury University at 10 a.m. and Lynchburg College at noon.
Against Christopher Newport (6-0), second baseman Jenna DiDonato (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) had a two run homer. Right hander Jackie Sasko (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) took the loss on the mound. Sasko gave up five hits and compiled seven strikeouts.
For the Captains, Kristen Rowe was the winning pitcher in relief. Rowe (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings and allowed one hit. Third baseman Jessie Atkinson recorded two hits (three at bats), three RBIs, two runs scored and two home runs.
Christopher Newport had a 1-0 advantage after the fourth inning on a solo home run by Atkinson. In the top of the fifth, Rowan took the lead on DiDonato’s two run shot. She brought home third baseman Julie Leskanic (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) who got on base with a single. Atkinson posted the winning two run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
Righty Clarissa Norwich pitched the shutout for Roanoke (5-1) in the second game. Norwich (1-1) only surrendered one hit in seven innings. Amanda Singer (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) was the losing pitcher. She allowed five hits and struck out eight batters.
The Maroons scored all three runs in the top of the third inning. Shortstop Sarah Caudle walked and later came home on a fielder’s choice. First baseman Kelsey Ruitenberg blasted a two run homer.
