Rowan Wins Two Over New Jersey City, 8-0 and 11-0

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team had two wins against conference opponent New Jersey City University in the home opener on Tuesday. Rowan recorded shutouts of 8-0 and 11-0. 

Both games only went five innings because of the eight-run rule. The Profs are 17-5 overall and 4-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Gothic Knights have a 6-12 record with a 0-4 conference mark.

In the opener, right-hander Jackie Sasko (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) recorded a no-hitter and her fifth shutout of the year. Sasko (11-1) had three strikeouts. Righty Lacey Skowronski (sr. Bayonne, NJ/Holy Family Academy) took the loss for NJCU.

Rowan designated player Ashley Landi (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) was three for three at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. She registered two doubles and a triple. First baseman Nicki Veneziano (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) and center fielder Kristina Brenner (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) each contributed with two hits (three at bats). Veneziano had one RBI and one run scored while Brenner scored two runs. Second baseman Jenna DiDonato (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) and catcher Steph Taraschi (jr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) totaled two RBIs apiece.

In the first inning, Landi doubled in DiDonato for the first run. The Profs were up 4-0 after three runs in the third. DiDonato crossed the plate on the ground out. Veneziano drove in Landi with a single. Left fielder Casey Roselle (so. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) singled in Veneziano. Rowan tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning. Brenner came home on an error and Landi had a RBI triple that scored DiDonato. Taraschi knocked in Landi with a single. In the fifth, Brenner scored the game ending run on an error.

Right-hander Amanda Singer (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/E. Brunswick) was the winning pitcher in the second game. Singer (6-4) struck out five batters in her fifth shutout. Righty Andrea Delucrezia (sr. Belleville, NJ/St. Mary’s-Rutherford) was the losing pitcher.

DiDonato was three for three with three runs scored, two RBIs, a double and a home run. Catcher Ashley Minch (fr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) registered three hits in three at bats, three RBIs, two runs scored and a double. Landi added two hits (three at bats), two runs scored, a double and a triple. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and Roselle each had two hits (three at bats) and two RBIs. Roselle also posted a double while Leskanic recorded a home run.

The Profs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Minch’s single scored DiDonato who got on base with a double. Roselle drove in Veneziano and Minch with a double. In the second, Rowan pulled away 8-0 after scoring five runs. DiDonato blasted a two run shot over the left field fence. Minch doubled in Landi and Leskanic recorded a two run homer.

Rowan continued with two runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth. Minch plated DiDonato with a single. Landi crossed the plate on Veneziano’s sacrifice fly. In the fifth inning, pinch hitter Lisa Benedetti (so. Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) had a sac fly that scored the final run.

Next, Rowan hosts Montclair State University on Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m.
