Rowan Sweeps NJAC Opponent Ramapo, 2-0 and 5-1

MAHWAH, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept Ramapo College, 2-0 and 5-1 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader on Saturday. The Profs snapped the Roadrunners’ 12 game win streak.

Rowan is 15-5 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Ramapo has a 12-2 record with a 0-2 NJAC mark. Right-hander Jackie Sasko (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) was the winning pitcher in the first game. Sasko (9-1) only allowed three hits in her fourth shutout on the season. She struck out six batters. Righty Deanna Giordano (so. Clifton, NJ/Clifton) took the loss the mound. Giordano (6-1) gave up nine hits and had three strikeouts.

Catcher Steph Taraschi (jr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) led the Profs with two hits (three at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a home run. Right fielder Heidi Smith (jr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) contributed with three hits (four at bats) and one run scored. For the Roadrunners, center fielder Katie Donnelly (jr. N. Haldedon, NJ/Eastern Christian) was three for three at the plate.

Rowan had a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Taraschi recorded a two run homer, her first of the year. Smith led off the inning with a single and went to second on a sac bunt by second baseman Jenna DiDonato (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert).

Sasko (10-1) got the win in the second game in relief. In 3.2 innings, she did not give up a hit while striking out four batters. Right-hander Lyndsay Buehler (so. River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) was the losing pitcher. She pitched six innings and allowed 11 hits and five runs. Buehler totaled five strikeouts.

Shortstop Ashley Minch (fr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) was two for two with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Profs. Minch recorded a double and a home run. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) contributed with three hits (three at bats) while first baseman Nicki Veneziano (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) and Smith each added two hits. Smith also had one RBI and Veneziano scored one run. For Ramapo, left fielder Rachel Wong (so. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) was three for four with one RBI and a double.

The Profs went up 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) had a sac fly that scored pinch runner Brit Evanick (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford). Minch doubled in left fielder Casey Roselle (so. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) and Veneziano. Smith’s RBI single brought home Minch.

Ramapo got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the fourth. Wong singled in pinch hitter Laura Herget (fr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) who had a double. Rowan tied the score in the bottom of the fifth on Minch’s solo homer.

Rowan hosts conference opponent New Jersey City University on Tuesday, March 31 in the home opener at 3 p.m.
