HAVERFORD, PA – The Rowan University softball team won two games at Haverford College on Friday. The Profs had an 11-1 victory in five innings and a 7-0 shutout.
In the first game, right-hander Jackie Sasko (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) pitched five innings for the win because of the eight run rule. Sasko (8-1) scattered five hits and struck out five batters. Catcher Steph Taraschi (jr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) totaled four hits (four at bats), two RBIs, two runs scored and two doubles. Second baseman Jenna DiDonato (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) contributed with three hits in four trips to the plate, two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Right fielder Heidi Smith (jr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) was two for four with two RBIs.
Cassandra Searls took the loss on the mound. Shortstop Candice Smith had two hits in three at bats and one run scored. Left fielder Dana Irshay, third baseman Marina Zambrotta and Searls each added a hit.
Rowan was ahead 3-0 after one run in the first inning and two in the second. Taraschi doubled in the first run. In the second, left fielder Casey Roselle (so. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) crossed the plate on an error and Smith singled in shortstop Alissa Francisco (fr. West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Reg.). The Profs tacked on five more runs in the third inning. Taraschi plated first baseman Nicki Veneziano (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) with a single. DiDonato’s double then scored Taraschi. Pinch hitter Jamie Parks (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) had a sac fly and DiDonato came home. Smith and designated player Ashley Landi (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) both had a RBI single. The Fords scored their lone run in the bottom of the third.
The Profs added two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. In the fourth, Taraschi reached base with a double and scored on a ground out. Pinch hitter Lisa Benedetti (so. Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) singled down the left field line, scoring DiDonato. Veneziano came home on an error in the fifth.
Right-hander Amanda Singer (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/E. Brunswick) recorded her fourth shutout on the season in the nightcap. Singer (5-4) only allowed four hits and recorded 10 strikeouts. Landi paced the Profs with two hits (four at bats), three RBIs, two runs scored, a double and a home run. Shortstop Ashley Minch (fr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) was two for three with one run scored. Roselle registered two RBIs and a home run.
Rowan has an overall record of 13-5 while Haverford is 9-5 on the season. Righty Lisa Karmel was the losing pitcher. In four innings, she gave up three hits and two runs. Designated player Erin Delaney was two for three with two doubles.
The Profs were ahead 1-0 after Landi’s home run in the third inning. In the fourth, Roselle’s sac fly scored Veneziano. Rowan put the game out of reach with five runs in the seventh. Roselle led off with a homer. Landi doubled in two runs and Smith scored on a ground out. Taraschi’s triple brought home Landi.
Rowan starts its conference schedule at Ramapo College on Saturday, March 28 at 1 p.m.
