GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – The Rowan University softball team swept a doubleheader at Gwynedd-Mercy College, 8-0 and 11-0 on Tuesday afternoon. Both games went six innings because of the eight-run rule.
Right-hander Jackie Sasko (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) was the winning pitcher in the first game. She pitched a complete game for her third shutout on the season. Sasko (7-1) allowed three hits and struck out eight batters. Righty Heather Morgan (so. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) took the loss. She (2-1) had six strikeouts.
Designated player Ashley Landi (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) paced the Profs with two hits (four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored. She recorded a double and a triple. Catcher Steph Taraschi (jr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) was three for four at the plate with one RBI, a double and two runs scored. Right fielder Heidi Smith (jr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) and second baseman Jenna DiDonato (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) contributed with two hits apiece. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) scored two runs.
The Profs went up 3-0 after two runs in the second inning and one in the third. Landi tripled in Leskanic for the first run and scored on shortstop Alissa Francisco’s (fr. West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Reg.) single. In the third, Taraschi led off with a double and came home on a RBI single by left fielder Casey Roselle (so. Sparta, NJ/Sparta). Rowan ended the game early with five runs in the sixth. Smith crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice and Taraschi singled in DiDonato. Roselle and Taraschi both scored on an error then Landi doubled in Leskanic.
In the second game, right-hander Amanda Singer (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/E. Brunswick) recorded her third shutout. Singer (4-4) only gave up one hit and had six strikeouts. Righty Susan Miller (so. Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) took the loss on the mound.
For the Profs, Smith was two for five with two RBIs, a double and one run scored. First baseman Nicki Veneziano (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) collected three hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Leskanic registered three hits in four plate appearances, one RBI and two runs scored. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) added two hits (three at bats) and two runs scored.
Rowan is on the road again at Haverford College on Thursday, March 26 at 3 p.m.
