KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team split two games on the final day at the Rebel Spring Games. Rowan shut out Westminster College (PA), 8-0 in five innings and lost to Illinois Wesleyan University, 5-0.
Right-hander Jackie Sasko (Groveville, NJ/Steinert) pitched a no-hitter against Westminster for her sixth win. Sasko (6-1) recorded eight strikeouts. Right fielder Heidi Smith (jr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) was two for three at the plate with two RBIs, two runs scored and a triple. Catcher Steph Taraschi (jr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) contributed with a double and one run scored. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) contributed with two RBIs and center fielder Kristina Brenner (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) scored two runs.
The Profs had two runs in the third inning. Smith tripled in Brenner for the first run then she continued home on an error in the outfield. Rowan recorded six runs in fifth that ended the game earlier because of the eight run rule. Taraschi scored on a fielder's choice after getting on base with a double. Second baseman Jenna DiDonato (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) crossed the plate on a fielder's choice. Smith plated Franciso with a single. Left fielder Casey Roselle (so. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) drove in one run with a single and Leskanic (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) registered a two RBI single.
Against Illinois Wesleyan, righty Amanda Singer (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/E. Brunswick) took the loss on the mound. Singer gave up four earned runs and struck out four batters. Allison Ward recorded a two run homer in the seventh inning for Illinois Wesleyan. Lisa Narotsky contributed with two doubles.
Rowan returns home and travels to Gwynedd-Mercy College on Tuesday, March 24 for a 3 p.m. nonconference doubleheader.
