KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team defeated Fontbonne University (MO), 2-1 and Endicott College (MA), 14-1 in five innings on Wednesday. The Profs are riding a seven game win streak at the Rebel Spring Games.
Right-hander Amanda Singer (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/E. Brunswick) pitched five innings against Fontbonne for the win. Singer (3-3) only allowed one hit and had four strikeouts. Righty Jackie Sasko (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) was on the mound for the final two innings to earn the save. Sasko scattered four hits and struck out two batters.
Designated player Jamie Parks (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) was two for two at the plate with a double and one run scored. Designated player/second baseman Ashley Landi (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) contributed with two hits (three at bats) and center fielder Kristina Brenner (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) added two (three at bats).
The Profs went up 1-0 in the first inning. Right fielder Heidi Smith (jr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) reached on a two base error and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She crossed the plate on a fielder's choice. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) recorded a sac fly in the third inning for a 2-0 lead. Leskanic sent home Parks who got on base with a single. Fontbonne’s lone run came in the top of the seventh. Center fielder Stephanie Wilson had a RBI single that scored catcher Samantha Rosner.
Sasko pitched her fifth win of the season against Endicott. She went four innings and gave up one hit while striking out four hitters. Right-hander Kelli Martino (so. Eldora, NJ/Middle Twp.) was on the mound for the final inning because of the eight run rule. She only allowed two hits and had two strikeouts.
First baseman Nicki Veneziano (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) was one for two with a home run. She recorded a two run shot in the fourth inning. Smith had two hits (three at bats) and one run scored. Brenner contributed with a two RBI double. Catcher Steph Taraschi (jr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) added two hits in three at bats. She scored two runs and had one RBI. Left fielder Casey Roselle (so. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) totaled two RBIs and two runs scored.
Rowan (8-4) will take Thursday off before playing the last two games of the Florida trip. On Friday, March 20, the softball team has a 9 a.m. game against Westminster College (PA) followed by a 1 p.m. contest against Illinois Wesleyan University.
