Rowan Takes Two At Rebel Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, FL – The Rowan University softball team won two games at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday. Rowan shut out Framingham State College (MA), 3-0 and defeated Trinity College (CT), 3-1 in nine innings.

The Profs improve to 4-4 on the season. Right hander Amanda Singer (so. Monmouth Jct., NJ/East Brunswick) pitched a complete game for the shutout against Framingham State. Singer (1-3) only gave up two hits and struck out six batters. Third baseman Julie Leskanic (fr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) had two hits (two at bats), a double and one run scored.

Rowan got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the third inning. Leskanic doubled to left field and second baseman Jenna DiDonato (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) crossed the plate. DiDonato got on base with a walk and advanced to second and third on wild pitches. The Profs tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Center fielder Kristina Brenner (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) walked then stole second. She moved to third on a wild pitch and stole home. Left fielder Casey Roselle (so. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) scored the third run on an error.

Against Trinity, righty Jackie Sasko (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) went nine innings and scattered four hits. Sasko (3-1) had three strikeouts. Right fielder Heidi Smith (jr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) contributed with three hits (five at bats) and scored one run. First baseman Nicki Veneziano (fr. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) was two for three at the plate with one RBI.

In the top of the ninth, shortstop Alissa Franciso (fr. West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Reg.) drove in catcher Steph Taraschi (jr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) with a single. Veneziano came home on a ground out after reaching base with a walk.

Rowan went up 1-0 in the first inning on Sasko’s RBI single that scored Smith. Smith had a single then went to second a sacrifice bunt. Trinity tied the score in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI single by left fielder Melanie Orphanos.

The Profs play again at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday, March 17. Rowan starts the day with a 9 a.m. game against Nichols College (MA) followed by an 11 a.m. contest against Utica College (NY).
