Rowan Falls at Penn State Berks, 86-74

READING, PA – The Penn State Berks women’s basketball team defeated visiting Rowan University, 86-74 in a nonconference game on Tuesday night.

The Nittany Lions had four players that scored in double figures. Forward Steph Binder (jr. Reading, PA/Wilson) led the way with 22 points and center Courtney Bailey (sr. Harrisburg, PA/Dauphin Co. Vo-Tech) followed with 20. Bailey grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Guard Jasmine Harris-Kane (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Simon Gratz) contributed with 18 points and dished six assists.

Penn State Berks improves to 2-4 on the season while Rowan has a 5-3 record. For the Profs, forward Amanda Jennings (sr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) scored 21 points and pulled down eight boards. Guard Gina Catanzariti (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) totaled 15 points and six rebounds. Guard Lauren Creel (so. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) came off the bench and added 10 points. Guard Alissa Lamey (so. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) accumulated seven assists.

After the first half, Rowan was ahead 35-32. Jennings nailed two free throws at 18:16 in the second period that put the Profs up by five points (39-34). Penn State Berks followed with a 7-2 run to tie the score at 41. Binder had the tying layup (16:49) and forward Shirah Graybill (fr. Lancaster, PA/Cocalico) followed with a basketball (15:44) to take the lead (43-41). Binder's two free throws at 13:53 made the score 48-41. The Nittany Lions were up by 10 points (60-50) after a field goal by Bailey with 9:51 remaining. With 3:23 left, Binder’s layup put Penn State Berks ahead by 16 points (74-58). Rowan trailed by 10 points (84-74) after Catanzariti hit a three-pointer with 15 seconds on the clock. Guard Dorian Bishop (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) had two foul shots (86-74) with 13 seconds left to end the scoring.

Rowan started the game with three baskets to lead 6-0 at 18:29. Jennings, Lamey and Catanzariti each had two points. Center Jamie Norris (so. Pottstown, PA/St. Pius X) had a three-point play that tied the score at 13 with 11:17 remaining. Jennings answered with two straight layups to lead by four points (17-13) at 10:34. The Profs were ahead 25-18 at 5:43 after Jennings’ field goal. With 2:12 left, Rowan had a nine point advantage (33-24) after Jennings scored. The Nittany Lions closed the period with an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to three points (35-32). Harris-Kane contributed with five points and Bailey had three.

Rowan returns home on Saturday, December 12 against Arcadia University at 7 p.m.
