GLASSBORO, NJ – Forward Amanda Jennings scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Rowan University women’s basketball team over Widener University on Friday night.
Jennings (sr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) was 13 for 24 from the floor and two for two from the line. She pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds, 12 were defensive. Guard Ashley Russo (fr. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) contributed with eight points off the bench. Forward Michelle Lala (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) and guard Alissa Lamey (so. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) each added seven points. Lamey also dished seven assists and had five steals. Guard Danielle Rohe (sr. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) totaled five steals and four assists.
The Profs have a 7-3 record while the Pride is 6-4 overall. For Widener, center Casey Pritz (so. Abington, NJ/Abington) and forward Francesca Lee (fr. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) scored 10 points apiece. Pritz also grabbed 10 boards. Forward Vanessa Hejnas (fr. Delran, NJ/Delran) compiled nine points and eight rebounds. Guard Lil Carney (fr. Narbeth, PA/Lower Merion) chipped in with eight points and guard Kate Dellinger (fr. Wrightsville, NJ/Eastern) had eight rebounds.
Rowan started the second half with an 11 point lead (26-15). Lala had two free throws that made the score 42-28 at 11:54. Widener followed with a 10-3 surge in 4:33 to pull within six points (44-38). Lee scored four points and Hejnas, Carney and Pritz had two apiece. Russo’s layup put the Profs ahead by 10 points (50-40) with 5:36 remaining. The Pride cut the deficit to three points (52-49) after a 9-2 run that ended at 4:17. Jennings hit a jumper at 2:32 to lead 54-49. In the final 1:59, the Profs nailed 12 of 15 foul shots to seal the win.
In the first period, Widener was ahead until Lala’s jumper tied the score at five (15:31). Pritz had two free throws (13:44) and the Pride trailed by two (9-7). Rowan followed with 11 straight points for a 13 point advantage (20-7) at 6:14. Jennings scored four points, Rohe contributed with three and Lamey and Russo had two apiece. The Profs were up by 15 points (24-9) after a layup by Jennings with 4:30 remaining. At the intermission, Rowan was ahead 26-15. Jennings scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Rowan is off for two weeks for the semester break then travels to Wesley College on Monday, January 4 for a 7 p.m. nonconference game.
