SCRANTON, PA – University of Scranton forward Ray Straccia scored the winning goal in a 2-1 overtime victory against visiting Rowan University on Monday night.
Straccia (sr. Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) recorded the game winner at 108:15 after a serve from goalkeeper Justin Frick (jr. Columbia, NJNorth Warren Reg.) over the Profs’ defense. He blasted a shot from 25 yards out. Scranton has an 8-2-1 record and Rowan is 7-4-1 overall.
The Royals took 18 shots and the Profs had 13. Scranton goalie Brandon Dombrowski (jr. Hockessin, DE/Salesianum) made three saves in 45:00. Frick played 63:15 and he stopped three shots. For Rowan, goalkeeper Charlie Cunliffe (jr. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) turned away eight shots.
Scranton had a 1-0 lead after the first half. Midfielder Joseph Burbella (so. Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) had the goal with an assist from forward Michael Drew (jr. Sellersville, PA/Lansdale Catholic). With 5:05 remaining in regulation, back Jason Dugan (sr. Seaville, NJOcean City) tied the score on a penalty kick.
Rowan had two goals that were called back. In the 74th minute, an offsides call negated forward Frank Renna’s (so. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) goal. Forward Mike Pascale (sr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) had a goal that did not count two minutes into the second overtime because of a holding call.
