Women's Volleyball Goes 1-1 in Tri-Match with Swarthmore and Stevenson

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s volleyball team hosted a tri-match with Swarthmore College and Stevenson University on Saturday.

Swarthmore (17-6) defeated Rowan (10-15), 3-0 with set scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-13. In the second match, Swarthmore come from behind to beat Stevenson (10-15), 3-2 with set scores of 20-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-13 and 15-6. In the nightcap, Rowan topped Stevenson, 3-1. The set scores were 25-20, 24-26, 26-24 and 28-26.

In the first match, the Garnet were led by outside hitter Genevieve Pezzola (so. Oakland, CA/St. Mary’s) and setter Allison Coleman (fr. Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto) with 10 kills apiece. Pezzola also had 18 digs and five aces, while Coleman added 11 assists and 10 digs. Outside hitter Kathryn Montemurro (fr. Bogota, NJ/Bergen County Academies) posted nine kills and nine digs. Defensive specialist Hillary Santana (so. South Lake Tahoe, CA/South Tahoe) and setter Kearney Bangs (sr. Kingston, WA/North Kitsap) both totaled 14 digs. Bangs also had 16 assists.

For Rowan, outside hitter Katie Havlicek (fr. Midland Park, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) compiled 14 kills and 11 digs. Setter Chrissy McKay (sr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) tallied 21 assists and 14 digs. Defensive specialist Sarah Betancourt (so. Harrington Park, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) posted 20 digs, while opposite Megan Mondelli (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) had 13.

Pezzola registered 13 kills and 30 digs against Stevenson. Montemurro followed with 12 kills and 17 digs. Bangs contributed with 11 kills, 19 assists, 12 digs and three aces. Santana and Coleman each had 21 digs. Coleman also dished 20 assists.

For Stevenson, outside hitter Avery Gabbard (fr. Arnold, MD/Broadneck) posted nine kills and 15 digs. Middle blocker Alex Mercer (jr. Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) chipped in with eight kills. Setter Amy Rudolph (so. North East, MD/Rising Sun) tallied 25 digs and 22 assists. Libero Alexa Carney (so. Towson, MD/Towson) had a team-high 22 digs. Middle blocker Brooke Gilley (so. Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) added 13 digs.

In the final match, Havlicek led the Profs with 13 kills, 18 digs and four service aces. Bowman recorded seven kills and 11 digs. McKay totaled 28 assists and 13 digs. Roselle had a team best 23 digs, while Mondelli had 18.

For the Mustangs, Gabbard compiled 18 kills and 19 digs. Middle blocker Kristen Lubeski (fr. Bishopville, MD/Stephen Decatur) contributed with nine kills, while outside hitter Dani Katsampis (jr. New Windsor, MD/Francis Scott Key) had eight kills and 14 digs. Rudolph registered 36 assists, 11 digs and four service aces. Libero Emilee Ceroy (fr. Davidsonville, MD/South River) had a match-high 30 digs.

Rowan hosts Rutgers-Newark in a conference game on Tuesday, October 20 at 7 p.m.
