Rowan Shuts Out NJAC Opponent Kean, 6-0

GLASSBORO, NJ – Forward Lauren Ross recorded a hat-trick for the Rowan University field hockey team in a 6-0 shutout over conference opponent Kean University on Saturday afternoon.

Rowan, ranked ninth in the nation, has a 9-4 record. The Profs are undefeated in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) with a 4-0 mark. The win snapped the Cougars’ six game win streak. Kean is 10-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Midfielder Julie Cairone (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) contributed with one goal and one assist. Forwards Nicole Valianti (jr. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) and Kate Hughes (sr. Rosenhayn, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) added one goal apiece. Midfielders Janna Tighe (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) and Ashley Adams (so. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek) and back Kelsey O’Neill (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) each picked up an assist.

Rowan out shot Kean, 20-2. Goalie Lisa Apt (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) started in the Profs’ cage and had one save. Goalie Jen Goldberg (fr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) stopped one shot in the final 8:28. For the Cougars, goalie Lauren Dobbs (jr. Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) turned away 12 shots.

The Profs were ahead 3-0 after the first half. Valianti knocked in a rebound for the first goal at 6:24. Ross (jr. Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester) scored her first goal 20 minutes later. Her second came at 30:58 when she tipped in a shot by O’Neill.

In the final period, Ross recorded the hat-trick with an unassisted goal at the 48 minute mark. Cairone scored (59:10) with an assist from Adams. Hughes’ goal came on a penalty corner at 60:25 with an assist from Tighe and Cairone.

Rowan is home again on Wednesday, October 21 against nonconference opponent Catholic University at 6 p.m.
