Rowan Starts Indoor Season at New York City Gotham Cup

NEW YORK, NY – The Rowan University men’s and women’s indoor track teams started the 2009 season at the New York City Gotham Cup on Friday. The meet was held at the Armory.

Kyle Hayes (so. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) took sixth place in the long jump seeded with a leap of 22’ 9.25” (6.94 meters). Dan Collier (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) took 10th in the 800 meters unseeded with a time of 2:00.93. Nehemiah Burney-Porter (jr. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) was 12th in the 60 meter hurdles (8.68) followed by Kevin Gauntt (jr. Marlton, NJ/Seneca) 13th (8.69). Burney-Porter also came in 14th in the triple jump with 42’ 6.75” (12.97 meters). Mike Rivera (sr. Old Tappan, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) finished 20th in the one mile unseeded in 4:32.02.

The men’s 4x800 meter relay was 15th (8:32.43) with Nick Huddy (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.), Ben Chapman (fr. Beverly, MA/Beverly), Rivera and Jeff Terebey (so. Shamong, NJ/Seneca). The 4x400 meter relay took 17th with a time of 3:29.82. The relay included Collier, Jayce Maxwell (fr. Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan), Brian Makinson (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) and Ben Bradley (so. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills).

The women’s distance medley came in sixth place in 13:03.16. The relay members were Eileen O’Mara (fr. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield), Lori Oglesby (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Buena Reg.), Alli Catenacci (so. Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) and Jena Peacock (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Our Lady of Mercy Academy). The 4x400 meter relay was 18th (4:13.49) with Tamara Jones (so. Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson), Heidi DeGuzman (fr. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken), Amirah Muneer (fr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) and Rosalee Johnson (fr. Willingboro, NJ/Holy Cross). 

DeGuzman had a seventh place in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.92. Tamara Jones finished eighth in the 400 meters (59.57) and Muneer was 15th (1:00.69). Jones' time was a school record.  The old mark was 59.98 by Adrienne Lanford (1991). Peacock took 11th in the one mile seeded (5:16.51). O’Mara was 20th in the 800 meters unseeded (2:28.89). In the 1,000, Lisa Jones (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) came in 25th (3:12.97) followed by Catenacci 26th (3:14.71).

Next week, Rowan competes at the Lehigh University Covert Classic on Saturday, January 24.
