This is James Donoghue’s first season as an assistant coach at Rowan University. He will work with the quarterbacks throughout the year.
Prior to Rowan, Donoghue served as the quarterback coach for The College of New Jersey from 2009-2010. From 1980-1991, Donoghue held the varsity football head coach position at Delran High School. During that time, he amassed a 61-41-3 record while leading his team to three Burlington County Scholastic League (BCSL) Freedom Division Championships (1987, 1989, 1990) and three NJSIAA South Jersey Group II State Championships (1987, 1989, 1990). In 1987, he was named the Brooks Irvine Football Club Coach of the Year and the Philadelphia Inquirer South Jersey Coach of the Year. Donoghue was selected as the Burlington County Football Club Coach of the Year in 1990. In that same year, he was selected to the New Jersey Interscholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The decorated coach was inducted into the 2006 South Jersey Coaches of Boys Athletics Hall of Fame.
He was an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Holy Cross High School from 1977-1979. Donoghue was responsible for the quarterbacks, running backs and defensive backs. Holy Cross won the BCSL Liberty Division in 1978 and 1979 and were the 1977 South Jersey Parochial A State Champions.
From 1999-2009, Donoghue was the principal at Hammonton High School. Previously, he was the principal at Hammonton Middle School from 1996-1999. In addition, he was the high school’s supervisor of athletics and health and physical education from 1991-1996.
In 1976, Donoghue earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting at Syracuse University. He played quarterback and started several games in 1973 before becoming a full-time starter from 1974-1975. He was recognized by the Burlington County Football Club as the College Player of the Year and received the Joseph Alexander Award from Syracuse for Excellence in Football, Scholarship and Citizenship in 1975. He also spent time on the freshman basketball team at Syracuse during the 1972-1973 season.
