WHAT'S IN A NAME

Lovingly known as “Coach” by his students, athletes and peers, Richard Wackar coached four different sports during his storied career. Wackar was Glassboro State’s golf coach for 25 years (1965-88), amassing over 200 wins and leading the Profs to seven NJAC Championships. His student-athletes collected 14 individual championships, three of his golfers were All-Americans, and seven went on to play professionally.

As football coach (1963-80), Wackar guided the Profs to five conference titles and one Eastern Conference championship. Four of his players received All-America honors and one played professional football. Wackar is responsible for reinstating the University’s football program in 1963 after it was discontinued following the 1950 season.

Wackar was the men’s basketball coach at Glassboro State from 1956-62. His teams won three state championships and finished second three times. He led the Profs to a 100-53 record during his seven seasons as head coach.

Responsible for starting the sport at Glassboro State, Wackar coached the men’s cross country team from 1957-62. He guided the Profs to two NJAC Championships, two district titles and one appearance in the national cross country championship.

Wackar is the only coach recognized in NJAC history to win conference championships in football, basketball, golf and cross country.

Wackar was inducted into the Rowan-Glassboro State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.

JOHN PAGE MEMORIAL FIELD

John Page Memorial Field was dedicated in a ceremony at halftime of the Glassboro-Bridgeport football game on November 6, 1971.The dedication featured the reading of a telegram from New Jersey native and Penn State star Lydell Mitchell.

Page was a Glassboro track athlete who died in a car accident as a student.

Naming of the new, athletic facility was actually the result of a Board of Trustees meeting on November 14, 1969. The Board acted at the urging of the Black Cultural League, which proposed the name with unanimous support of the Student Government Association.

At first, the Board delayed the naming. However, Board Member, Mr. Paul Tuerff, outlined reasons why the stadium should be named in Page's honor:

  1. It will serve as a tribute to an individual, both for what he was and for what he stood for;
  2. It will recognize Page as a pioneer King Scholar;
  3. It will recognize Page as the person responsible for bringing VISTA to the campus.

In 1972, a proposal was set forth to add lights to the stadium and nearby tennis courts at the expense of $83,500.

More renovations took place in 2009, which included upgrading to aluminum seating, a scoreboard, press box, concessions and an elevator for greater fan accessibility. Turf was also added that same year.
