WILLIAMSPORT, PA --
Nate Maiers threw three touchdown passes all to
Michael Zarfati and
Nunes Bukula IV ran for 116 yards and a score as Rowan won 34-23 at Lycoming on Saturday.
Defensively,
Giaini Derameaux had quite the day, racking up a career-high 11 tackles, 3.5 tackles for losses, and 2.5 sacks.
Jackson Ferrante added a personal-best nine stops while rookie
Ezra Williams-Thomas collected five tackles and his first interception.
Maiers was 15-of-23 for 284 yards with Zarfati going for a career-high 133 yards on six grabs as the offense scored 21 points in the third quarter to get ahead for good. Bukula added a 60-yard touchdown run along with four catches for 29 yards.
On the second drive of the first quarter, Maiers connected with Zarfati for 45 yards to give the Profs its first points of the game.
The Warriors countered with a Joe Lyons 34-yard TD pass to Dawson Debebe early in the second. Rowan's next two possessions came up empty as a 20-yard field goal attempt was blocked and later Maiers' first interception led to a score from the home squad to put Lycoming up, 14-7.
Williams-Thomas kept it 14-7 at the half as he picked off Lyons in the end zone on a long pass on the final play of the second quarter.
Mordecai Ford ran the second half kickoff 59 yards to the Lycoming 32 yard line where two plays later, Maiers hooked up with Zarfati for 27 yards to knot things up at 14-14.
The Maiers-to-Zarfati connection struck again on the next series, this time from 31 yards. After a 31-yard field goal cut into the Rowan lead, Bukula ran 60 yards on the first play of the ensuing drive for his first rushing touchdown on the season. A Terrence Oliver six-yard scoring run pulled Lycoming within five, but the two-point conversion pass attempt fell incomplete keeping it 28-23 heading into the fourth.
Kicker
Greg Casimir added a pair of field goals, the first a 33 yarder on the first possession of the quarter, and later a 36-yard kick that capped a four-minute drive and extended the lead.
Derameaux had a pair of sacks during the next Lycoming possession, which ended on a turnover on downs after a fourth-down stop at midfield with just under three minutes to play. The Profs then controlled the ball the rest of the way to pick up the second win on the year.
Lyons finished 22-of-39 for 290 yards with a TD and an interception. Debebe was his top target (five catches for 120 yards) while Oliver added a pair of rushing touchdowns while going for 79 yards on 24 carries.
Next up for the Profs is a home date with Christopher Newport in the NJAC opener for both teams on Family Weekend. Kickoff from Richard Wackar Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
