GLASSBORO, NJ -- Pitchers
Rylee Lutz and
Emily McCutcheon each tossed complete game shutouts to help lift #2 Rowan to a New Jersey Athletic Conference Doubleheader sweep of Stockton on Wednesday, taking game one, 1-0, and the second, 3-0.
The Profs improve to 30-0 and 8-0 in conference play on the season.
Liz McCaffery also made a bit of team history, recording her 200th career hit in game one, becoming the 11th player in the program record books to surpass the milestone.
Game one
Lutz (12-0) allowed just one hit on two walks and six strikeouts to outduel Stockton's Nerina Tramp, the reigning NJAC Pitcher of the Year, in a one-run matchup. Tramp yielded four hits and an unearned run while adding two walks and two K's.
McCaffery's double to lead off the third gave her the milestone hit. She would score on the next batter as a sacrifice attempt from
McKenzie Melvin was mishandled on the throw to first, allowing McCaffery to race home for the 1-0 lead.
Lutz nailed it down in the seventh, getting out of a spot with runners on first and second with two outs. The senior induced a fly out to right to lock up the first win on the day.
McCaffery had two of the team's four hits while
Abigail Pawlowski added a hit and a walk.
Game two
Leading 1-0, Rowan tacked on two more runs in the sixth thanks to a sac fly from Melvin and later an RBI double from
Payton MacNair to add some breathing room.
McCaffery,
Payton MacNair,
Holly Markus, and
Zara MacNair all had two hits apiece.
McCutcheon (15-0) worked all seven innings, allowing just four hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Kate Evick's double in the second helped put runners at second and third. Markus knocked one through the right side to plate
Aly Reim for the 1-0 advantage.
After stranding runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings, the Profs came through with a big three spot in the bottom of the sixth. Three-straight singles loaded the bags for Melvin who flew out to shallow center, but not before pinch runner Makayla Dansky beat the throw home for a 2-0 lead. MacNair followed with a hard shot off the third baseman's glove into foul territory down the left field line, allowing sister Zara to come home for a three-run edge.
The Ospreys gave it one last shot in the seventh, getting two on with two outs, but McCutcheon wrapped up the sweep with a groundout to end it.
Rowan will welcome Ramapo tentatively for this Saturday for a NJAC doubleheader at 1 p.m. With inclement weather forecasted, please be sure to follow any schedule updates at
