GLASSBORO, NJ -- #13 Rowan fell, 6-0, to #3 Christopher Newport in game one of the 2024 NCAA Glassboro Super Regional best-of-three on Thursday.
Rowan Press Conference
The two teams will meet tomorrow in game 2 beginning at 1:00 p.m. with an 'if necessary' game to follow at 3:30 p.m. The Profs will need two wins on Friday in order to punch its ticket back to the championship series in Texas while the Captains need just one.
CNU plated all six runs in the third on seven hits and two walks. Four of the runs came with no outs as starter
Rylee Lutz battled through the frame.
Lutz got out of potential trouble in the fourth, turning a bases loaded, one-out spot into zeroes on the scoresheet as the junior got a pair of pop ups to squash the threat. After the fourth, Lutz yielded just two hits and a walk the rest of the way to help keep the Profs in the contest.
Rowan, who was designated the away team for this game, left seven on base for the game.
Payton MacNair doubled to lead off the second and moved to third on a sacrifice from
Kaitlyn Riggs but was left on the basepaths. The Profs put two on in each of the fifth and sixth innings, but CNU starter Jamie Martin left each frame unscathed.
Martin fanned seven Profs on five hits and two walks. Lutz allowed five runs on nine hits (which ties a season high), with four walks and two strikeouts.
Veronica Goode entered in the third and faced three batters.
Brooke Greaver was 1-for-2 with two walks and a two-run double as part of the six-run third inning for Christopher Newport. Candace Shaw, Katie Currin, and Jules Donnelly each had two hits apiece.
MacNair,
Liz McCaffery,
Cat Thomas,
McKenzie Melvin, and
Zara MacNair registered hits for Rowan. McCaffery and Melvin also walked.
