Comeback Falls Short for Field Hockey at #14 Lynchburg, 4-3

LYNCHBURG, VA - Rowan's attempt to make up a pair of two-goal deficits fell short as the Profs dropped a 4-3 decision on the road to #14 Lynchburg. It marked Rowan's seventh game this year against a ranked opponent.

Lynchburg (7-2) scored two goals in the first 13 minutes to take the quick lead, but Rowan (4-7) tied it up in the second quarter in a span of two minutes.

Rowan's Abby Goblirsch sent long pass into the left side of the circle as Olivia Griffin collected it and shot it into the far right side of the cage at 25:26 for her second goal of the season.

Two minutes later on a penalty corner, Paige Gray sent the pass to Allie Palumbo at the top of the circle, and her shot was redirected by Sidney Pavlishin, who tallied her second of the year to tie the score at 2-2.

That tie was short-lived after halftime as just two minutes into the third quarter, Lynchburg added two more goals to take a 4-2 advantage.

The Profs tried to make up the deficit again, starting with a goal at 37:17. Lily Bataloni took a shot that was partially blocked and Gracie Merrick followed it in for her fourth goal of 2024, but that would be the final goal of the day.

Freshman Delfina Vanelli made the first start of her career in goal for the Profs and posted three saves in 60 minutes while Rowan had a 12-9 edge in shots.

The Profs return home on Wednesday for a non-conference game against Widener at 6 p.m.
