Football Falls on the Road to Christopher Newport, 24-7

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Rowan fell behind in the first half and couldn't recover as Christopher Newport posted a 24-7 win over the Profs in NJAC football action. Rowan is now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

The Profs had 259 yards of total offense to 230 for CNU (3-3; 1-1),  but turnovers hurt the Profs as they fumbled three times, and lost two.

A Rowan fumble off a punt at the seven-yard line led to CNU's first touchdown, a 7-yard pass from Connor Barry to Trey Hayes.

After another Rowan fumble late in the first quarter, the Captains marched 92 yards in 12 plays, getting a field goal to go up, 10-0. After Rowan had to punt on its next possession, CNU went 55 yards, resulting in a 23-yard pass from Barry to Colin Hart for a 17-0 lead.

The Profs were stifled on their first possession of the second half, but on the second, saw Nunes Bukula IV rush for 19 yards on the drive, with Matt Welsey taking it in for a one-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 17-7.

Rowan had a 60-yard drive in the fourth, but it couldn't convert on fourth-and-two. CNU got the ball back at 2:50 and scored on a one-yard run with :46 left to seal the win.

Rowan QB Nate Maiers passed for 166 yards and Bukula rushed for 40 yards on 16 carries, with Tyshawn Bookman totaling 36 yards.

The Profs will be on the road again next Saturday at nationally-ranked Salisbury, for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
