GLASSBORO, NJ -- #16 Rowan had its run in the 2023 New Jersey Athletic Conference Softball Tournament come to an end on Friday as the Profs fell to TCNJ, 4-0, and then a 2-1 defeat to Ramapo on a walk-off two-run home run in the double elimination format as the tournament continued here in Glassboro.
The Profs will now await a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament when selections are made on Monday, 15th.
TCNJ and Ramapo will move on the championship series here tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. with the Lions needing one win and the Roadrunners two for the rights to the conference title.
Against TCNJ, Rowan was held scoreless for the just the second time this season as the Lions scored four unearned runs thanks to a season-high three errors.
Breanna Bryant was 2-for-3 and
Payton MacNair was 1-for-3 with a walk. Starter
Rylee Lutz went five innings, yielding three unearned runs on just two hits, while adding three strikeouts and three walks.
Emily McCutcheon spun the final two innings, allowing two hits and an unearned run.
The Lions scored twice in the third inning on Julia Mayernik's sac fly to deep right center plated runners on second and third.
TCNJ's Camryn Kitchin reached on an error to lead off the fourth and later came around to score on a single from Camryn Davies to put Rowan in a 3-0 deficit.
Rowan looked to answer in the sixth as back-to-back singles from
Korie Hague and Bryant and later
Gianna LaMorges was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs.
Grace Shukaitis sent a screamer to center where Jaclyn Carifi was able to track it down for the third out.
Ramapo stayed alive with its 5-2 win over Kean in an elimination game to knock the Cougars out and set up another elimination game against the Profs.
In that second game of the day, Rowan took a 1-0 lead in the second on a two-out bases loaded walk from Shukaitis to score
Cat Thomas.
The Roadrunners' Katie Rygiel ended things in the bottom of the seventh with a runner on as she cleared the fence in left for the game-winning home run.
Lutz suffered the loss (21-4) as the sophomore allowed five hits and five walks, with a strikeout in 6.1 innings of work. Thomas added a double for one of the team's two hits in the second game.
Holding that 1-0 lead in the sixth, the Profs used a pair of walks to put runners on first and second with one out, but Ramapo starter Marissa DiPaolo induced an inning-ending double play to end the Rowan threat.
