#24 Softball Notches Victories Over Carroll and Bowdoin to Stay Hot on Florida Trip

CLERMONT, FL -- #24 Rowan defeated Carroll, 4-0, and Bowdoin, 6-3, on Monday as the team continues play at The Spring Games in Florida.

Marina Costello worked six scoreless innings, yielding just three hits with three K's and Payton MacNair tied a career high with three hits, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the win over Carroll. Korie Hague Cat Thomas, Liz McCaffery, and Abigail Pawlowski each had two hits as the Profs engineered a run in the third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings.

Thomas knocked home McKenzie Melvin in the third for a 1-0 lead followed by a RBI base hit from MacNair in the fourth. It became 3-0 after Hague's single to left in the fifth. Pawlowski capped the scoring in the seventh with a two-out single to plate Gabbie Fonollosa.

In the day's second game, MacNair kept the hot hand, adding two hits with Melvin going 3-for-4 with a solo home run. She and McCaffery scored two times apiece.

Rowan built a 5-0 lead after three innings of play. MacNair came home for a 1-0 edge on a heads up play in the first, reaching third on a single to right from McCaffery, but took off for home and was able to get the Profs on the board. Thomas (sac fly) and Hague (sac bunt) later followed with RBI's to make it 3-0.

Melvin led off the third with a homer to left while later Hague added her second RBI, this time on a sac fly to plate McCaffery for a 5-0 advantage.

Starter Rylee Lutz, went five innings to pick up the win, allowing two runs on four hits with five K's and four walks. After the Polar Bears crossed two in the fifth, she was able to stop further damage in the frame by getting out of a one-out bases loaded jam with back-to-back strikeouts.

Rowan had the bags full in the sixth with two outs, but a sharp liner to center off the bat of Melvin was snagged on a nice play from Bowdoin's Angelina Mayers.

Emily McCutcheon, who came on for Costello in the Carroll game, entered for Lutz against Bowdoin and navigated the final two innings to pick up her first collegiate save.

The Profs play two again tomorrow down in the Sunshine State. First up is a 9 a.m. matchup with Mount St. Joseph before a 2 p.m. contest with Franklin & Marshall. Live stats will be available through the Rowan Athletics website.
