DAVENPORT, FL - The Rowan baseball team fell to Benedictine, 2-0, in action at the RussMatt Invitational, as the #5 Profs stranded 10 runners on base.
Trailing 1-0 since the fifth inning, Rowan (4-2) had a chance to tie it in the eighth when
Chris Curcio reached on an infield hit, and
Phil Sedalis singled to left. Pinch hitter
Anthony Schooley stroked a single to left, but Curcio was out at the plate on the throw by Benedictine leftfielder Chase Hanselman.
The Profs left the bases loaded twice in the game, in the third and seventh innings.
After the teams battled through four scoreless innings, Benedictine (6-2) got on the board in the fifth after Steven Salvino walked and advanced on a wild pitch and then a balk, and then scored on a wild pitch on a walk. The Eagles scored an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single by Logan Gregorio.
Tyler Cannon and
Chris Curcio were both 2-for-3 as the Profs managed just eight hits in the game.
Jake Reese went 5 2/3 innings for the Profs, striking out seven, but suffered the loss.
Ryan Iovine threw a scoreless inning and
Dylan Maria entered in the eighth and struck out two.
Benedictine starter Jackson Bahn limited the Profs to three hits, while Nick Shelton allowed five Rowan hits, but kept the Profs off the board in the final four innings.
The Profs will look to bounce back on Sunday against Buena Vista at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, FL, with the first pitch set for 1:45 p.m.
