Football Rallies Late but Runs Out of Time, Falling to Christopher Newport, 21-18, on Homecoming

Bukula IV runs for 132 yards

GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan rallied late but ran out of time as the Profs fell to Christopher Newport, 21-18, on the University's Homecoming played in a steady downpour at Coach Wackar Stadium, in NJAC football action. Rowan is now 2-4 on the year and 1-1 in conference play.
 
Trailing 21-10 for most of the game, Rowan had the ball on its own five-yard line with 2:41 remaining. On the second play, Nate Maiers completed a pass on the sideline before midfield to Kevin Degnan, who ran another 40-plus yards to finish off the 95-yard touchdown. The Profs completed the two-point conversion on a reception by Shane Martin to trail by just a field goal.
 
The Profs attempted an onside kick, but CNU gained possession and was able to run out the clock in the final two minutes.
 
Nunes Bukula IV gained 132 yards on 28 carries with one touchdown for the Profs, with Maiers completing five passes for 120 yards on the day. Degnan had three receptions
 
Christopher Newport (4-2; 2-0 NJAC) had a quick 7-0 lead as Trey Hayes took the opening kickoff 95 yards.
 
Rowan's Connor Batten connected on a 30-yard field goal to cap off a 26-yard drive late in the first quarter, cutting the Profs' deficit to 7-3. But CNU scored on the next possession as Gunner White ran 49 yards to score as time expired in the quarter, giving the Captains a 14-3 lead.
 
CNU capitalized on a Rowan fumble in the second quarter, and after a 36-yard return, went nine yards with Matt Dzierski running it in from one yard out to increase the lead to 21-3.

With five minutes left in the first half, Rowan began a drive that took them 74 yards. Bukula carried seven times in the nine-play drive and scored on a six-yard run to pull the Profs within 21-10 before halftime.
 
The teams combined to lose three fumbles under poor conditions and defensively for Rowan, Josh Ortiz and Carter Williams had nine tackles each. Ortiz also had a big sack of Dzierski for six yards.
 
The Profs remain at home next weekend and will face Salisbury on Saturday in a 1 p.m. start.
