SPRINGFIELD, MA --
Mike Husni connected with
John Maldonado for the go-ahead touchdown with 1:02 left and
AJ Kirvin added an interception on the next defensive series to help Rowan seal up a big 38-35 win at Springfield Saturday afternoon.
Husni finished the day with a career-high five touchdown passes on 21-of-31 passing for 316 yards and an interception. Three of those scores went to Maldonado who also had a personal best with three trips to the end zone along with 115 yards on nine catches. The Profs also got big plays from
James Fara and
CJ Barrett as well. Fara had two scores, one on the ground and the other was a 95-yard touchdown catch and run while Barrett added a 44-yard TD reception early in the fourth quarter.
After Barrett's touchdown, the defense came up with a huge goal line stop and turnover on the Pride. A fourth-and-1 from the Rowan 6 yard line saw
Aeneas Robinson knock the ball out where Springfield recovered three yards back and short of the line to gain, giving the ball back to the Profs.
The Pride's David Wells attempted just seven passes, but his three completions went for 50 yards and a score. On the ground, Wells added two touchdowns. As a team, Springfield ran for 360 yards, led by Arsen Shtefan who ran for a game-high 97 yards on 10 carries and a TD.
Barrett finished the day with four grabs for 71 yards.
Jajuan Hays rumbled for 80 yards on eight carries while Fara had 74 yards on 14 attempts.
It was the first career interception for Kirvin. Defensively, Robinson,
Ahmad Gantt, and
Jason Blanks each totaled six tackles. Gantt,
Michael Maciolek, and
Josh Ortiz added quarterback sacks.
After Springfield scored on its opening drive, the home team added another early score after picking off Husni at the Rowan 39 on a 1st and 10 from the Rowan 1. Two plays later, Wells dove in the end zone for a 14-0 lead.
Rowan rebounded on the very next drive, going 74 yards on eight plays, capped with the first of Maldonado's three TD's with 4:59 left in the first. Fara's long play, making it 14-14, came early in the second after the defense forced a three and out. Husni found Maldonado again, this time in the second to end a nine-play, 78-yard drive with 1:45 remaining in the quarter. The Pride had a chance to cut into the lead before the half, driving down to the Rowan 28, but Christian Hustra's 45-yard field goal attempt went wide right.
Wells ran in his second of the day at the 5:53 mark of the third to knot teams up at 21-21.
Jake Hurler connected on 34-yard field goal on the ensuing possession for a three-point edge. The Pride answered with a passing TD from Wells to put the home team back on top with 35 seconds in the period.
On the final go-ahead drive, Husni guided the offense 75 yards on 13 plays in a span of three and a half minutes, hooking up with Maldonado on a five-yard pass from the Springfield five-yard line for the eventual game winner.
The Profs have a bye next week and will return to action on Saturday, September 24th as Rowan welcomes Salve Regina in the home opener here at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium at 1 p.m.
