NJAC CHAMPIONS! #19 Softball Claims Conference Crown with a 4-3 Walkoff Win Over TCNJ

Profs earn 11th NJAC Title in program history

UNION, NJ -- Korie Hague delivered the game-winning RBI with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to score McKenzie Melvin to help Rowan defeat TCNJ, 4-3, in the championship game of the 2022 NJAC Tournament Sunday afternoon at Kean University.

The Profs capture the NJAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Selections will be announced on Monday at 1 p.m. at www.ncaa.com.

Rowan had runners on first and second in the seventh with two down as Hague hit a ball to second. The toss to get the runner at second for the third out was off the mark allowing Melvin to race home with the winning run.

Hague drove in a pair of runs while Liz McCaffery went 2-for-3 with a big solo home run in the fifth to tie the contest up at 3-3.

After the Lions crossed a run on a RBI double in the first, the Profs answered in the second. With the bases loaded, Grace Shukaitis tapped a ball towards second and beat out the throw for an infield hit to score pinch runner Gabbie Fonollosa. TCNJ countered with two runs in the top of the third for a 3-1 score.

Hague hit into a fielder's choice at second in the third, not before Payton MacNair, who led off the frame with a double to left, scored to cut the deficit in half.

Emily August (19-4) settled in after the fourth, allowing just two hits and three baserunners the rest of the way. On the day, the senior gave up three runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Melvin provided a key defensive play to end the top of the fifth, throwing out a runner at the plate on a single to center. McCaffery cranked her second homer of the season, this time with two outs in the bottom half to knot the contest up at 3-3.

In the seventh, Melvin reached on a leadoff single before McCaffery later worked a two-out walk, setting the stage for Hague to give the Profs the NJAC Title.
