GLASSBORO, NJ – Sophomore
Julia Patrone connected on a penalty stroke early in the second half to lift top-seeded and third-ranked Rowan to a 1-0 win over second-seeded TCNJ in the 2022 NJAC Field Hockey Championship. It is the Profs' second consecutive title and their ninth overall as they improve their record to 19-1 on the year.
Patrone converted the goal on the first penalty stroke first attempt of her career, putting the ball into the upper left corner of the net at 38:28. With that goal, she surpassed the 100-point mark in just two years, as she now has 101 (43 goals, 15 assists).
Vanessa DiDonato set up the play as she carried the ball more than 20 yards into the circle and then was taken down, with Rowan being awarded the penalty stroke.
Rowan goalkeeper
Abby Hainsworth made one save in the game to notch her fourth shutout of the season.
In a hard-fought, physical game, Rowan applied the pressure throughout, holding a 12-6 advantage in shots, and a 12-8 advantage in corners.
"It was a tough, physical game, with high intensity – a typical Rowan-TCNJ game. I'm happy to get out with a win," said head coach
Michelle Andre. "It feels good, it's a great accomplishment. I know we were expected to do it, but expecting to do it, and actually doing it is hard, and they're two different things – and we did a really good job."
The Profs earn the NJAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship and will await the announcement of their seeding and opponent on the NCAA Selection Show, on Sunday, November 6 at 10:30 p.m.
The win by the field hockey team capped an unprecedented day for Rowan Athletics as the Profs captured NJAC championships in men's soccer, women's soccer and volleyball in the past two days, and coupled with the men's cross country team's crown, have won five conference titles this Fall season.
