MONTCLAIR, NJ –
Nina Carlson and
Emma DeMaise scored a goal apiece to lead second-seeded and #23 Rowan to a 2-1 win over top-seeded and #12 Montclair State in the 2022 NJAC Women's Soccer Championship at MSU Soccer Park. The victory gives Rowan the NJAC's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship while it marks the Profs' fourth overall conference title and the first since 2016.
Rowan improves to 13-0-4 on the year, while notching its second win this season over the nationally-ranked Red Hawks.
DeMaise and
Sarah Bergan set up the first goal as Carlson put it into the lower center of the net at 28:52.
DeMaise then tallied the eventual gamewinner at 38:48 on a low shot into the center of the goal, also assisted by Bergan.
Montclair State was able to cut into the Profs' lead late, as Aileen Cahill scored at 77:06. It marked the first goal allowed by Rowan since September 12th, a shutout streak of 12 matches.
Montclair State outshot the Profs, 16-9, but Profs' goalkeeper
Calista Burke, the NJAC Defensive Player of the Year, made six saves to earn the victory.
"I loved the effort all year, we gutted out a victory today and I could not be more proud of the dedication the players showed throughout the season to get to this point," said head coach
Scott Leacott. "It is so well-deserved and we are looking forward to the NCAA Tournament next weekend."
The Profs will learn their seeding and opponent in the NCAA Championship during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, November 7 at 2 p.m., that can be viewed at NCAA.com.
