Football Wins Third in a Row; Turns Away Kean, 17-10

Highlights

GLASSBORO, NJ -- Rowan won its third-straight game as the defense held Kean on a fourth and goal from the eight-yard line with just under a minute as the Profs clipped Kean, 17-10, for a Homecoming victory Saturday afternoon at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium.

John Maldonado and James Fara each scored on the ground in the first half while defense allowed a season-low 41 rushing yards to help power the Profs to its third NJAC win on the year.

Kean hit a 42-yard field goal at the 5:27 mark of the fourth to make it a one-score game and got the ball back on their own 38 later in the stanza. The Cougars drove down inside the Rowan 10 late in the contest. Nick Cerulli came up with the stop on fourth down of Kean quarterback Robbie Nungesser at the six-yard line to cement the score.

Maldonado scored on Rowan's opening possession as the senior wide receiver dove in from the Kean 5 on a short end around. Kean tried a fake punt on a fourth and 2 from their own 33 but the pass was incomplete and gave the offense a short field. The Profs looked to add to the lead but a 28-yard field goal attempt from Jake Hurler just missed wide left.

Rowan's special teams came up with a big fumble recovery by Joel Deanley on a punt to give Rowan the ball at the Kean 33. Eight plays later, Fara banged his way into the end zone for his fourth rushing TD on the season, this time from one yard on a fourth-down play to add to the lead.

Kean finally got on the board at the 8:47 mark of the second as Nasir Williams ran it in from the one to cap a six-play, 75-yard drive.

Hurler made it 17-7 as his 27-yard field goal with 1:38 before the half.

Late in the third, Kean drove it to the Rowan 11, but Logan Matthews missed a 28-yard attempt to keep it a 10-point game. Back-to-back Rowan penalties on the Cougars' fourth-quarter field goal drive helped the visitors go 38 yards in just four plays.

Fara finished the day with 80 yards on 24 carries. Quarterback Mike Husni added 39 yards on the ground and was 8-of-18 for 75 yards passing. Maldonado was the top target, snaring four catches for 39 yards.

Defensively, Jason Blanks made five tackles with Mike Mascioli, AJ Kirvin, Miles Cook, and Eric Matos each having four stops.

For Kean, Nungesser was 21-of-40 for 251 yards and led the team with 27 yards on the ground. On the other side of the ball, Jamma Ndiaye had a game-high 16 tackles (8 solo) with 2.5 tackles for losses.

Rowan hits the road next Saturday as the team heads to Salisbury to face the NJAC-leading Sea Gulls in a conference matchup starting at 1 p.m.
