Box Score SPRINGFIELD, MA – Second-half goals by
Aidan Sheehan and
Emma DeMaise lifted Rowan to a 2-0 season-opening win over Western New England in women's soccer action today in a driving rain storm. Prof goalkeeper
Bristol Pizzuto made six saves to earn the shutout.
After a scoreless first half, the Profs tallied their first goal of the year at 53:17 after
Nina Carlson dribbled to the outside of the box and sent it to the middle. Sheehan gathered it and used her right foot to net the initial goal, which was the 10th of her career.
Just 11 minutes later,
Gabby Dean was taken down in the box by a Western New England defender and the Profs were awarded a penalty kick. DeMaise, a freshman, put her shot into the left corner of the net for the first goal of her career at 64:48.
"I thought we were as poor as we could be in the first half, letting the conditions get in our heads a bit. But we settled down in the second half and played terrific," said head coach
Scott Leacott. "It was a great way to start the season with a win."
Rowan held a 12-8 advantage in shots, outshooting the home team, 8-3, in the second half.
Rowan returns home to host a pair of games on the weekend. The Profs will take on Centenary on Saturday at 4 p.m. and then will face Adrian on Sunday at 6 p.m.
