EWIING, NJ -- Rowan was edged out in penalty kicks, 5-4, as top-ranked TCNJ captured the 2021 New Jersey Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship on a chilly Friday evening.
The two teams were scoreless through 110 minutes, as the game is officially listed as a tie. Adding to the drama, the teams labored through seven rounds of penalty kicks before the Lions came back from a 2-0 differential to tie things up at 3-3 after the standard five rounds.
Goalie
Bristol Pizzuto finished the game with seven saves, including two big ones in the opening rounds of the penalty kicks.
In the first half, TCNJ outshot the Profs, 10-2, with Pizzuto making two saves. The defense weathered through 10 shots but the teams drew blanks at the half.
The Lions had a good look as a centering pass was one touched on net but drew the cross bar in the 51st minute.
Rowan also caught a break in the 65th minute as a trip in the box awarded the Lions a penalty kick, Ava Curtis' attempt hit the bottom of left post and was cleared away to help keep the game scoreless.
Pizzuto made two spectacular diving stops, one in the 78th minute and another with just under three minutes in regulation.
TCNJ goalie Alexandra Panasuk was credited with one save, but her stop on
Nina Carlson's last penalty kick gave the home team the victory.
Rowan will now await for a possible at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. Selections will be made on Monday afternoon. Check back on our social media (RowanAthletics) and
