GLASSBORO, NJ –
Krystyna Hovell's goal with 10 minutes to play lifted #4 Rowan over Ohio Wesleyan, 2-1, in the Second Round of the NCAA Championship held at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium. The win advances the Profs to the NCAA Elite Eight and a third-round matchup with #9 Washington and Lee (18-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Hovell deflected a shot from
Kristiina Castagnola off a corner for the gamewinner at 50:04, marking her 16th goal of the season and fifth gamewinner.
Ohio Wesleyan (11-6) got on the board in the second quarter on just their second shot of the game when Sarah Hanley dribbled in along the end line and tucked it in the net at 26:09.
The Profs tied it up just one minute later on a corner when
Julia Cavicchio blasted a shot into the left side of the net off the pass from Hovell at 27:53.
Rowan (17-2), which has won 15 games in a row, dominated the game offensively, holding a commanding 39-2 advantage in shots.
"Every game is a battle at this point. You're always going to get a team's best effort. We did some nice things. Again, our defense did a stellar job although we made a mistake at the one end. One shot, one goal is not always a good thing," said Rowan head coach
Michelle Andre. "But as far as everything else, we scored when we had to. I thought their goalie did a nice job and their defense and marking did a nice job. We had our chances and we just have to make sure we capitalize on them tomorrow. These preliminaries and semifinal games are always tough, no matter what."
Washington and Lee defeated #18 Scranton, 2-0, in Saturday's second game to advance to the third round matchup on Sunday against the Profs.
