MONTCLAIR, NJ - Montclair State jumped out to a 17-0 lead and never looked back in handing Rowan a 20-7 defeat in NJAC football action today.
After a scoreless first quarter, MSU (2-6; 1-3 NJAC) got on the board with 8:26 left in the second as the Red Hawks capped a 95-yard drive when Jamie Hamilton caught a 30-yard pass from Ja'Quill Burch.
The home team added another in the third when Nelson Reilly made a 22-yard reception to put Montclair up 14-0. Early in the fourth, Montclair State went 44 yards and Andrew Myerson connected on a 28-yard field goal to increase the lead to 17-0.
Rowan got its only points of the game with 5:13 remaining on a 76-yard drive. Among the big plays in the drive was a 31-yard catch by
Terry Carlstrom on 3
rd-and-10 and then a pass interference call on MSU on an incompletion to Carlstrom that gave the Profs the ball on the 12-yard line. After
Mike Husni ran for seven yards, he tossed a five-yard touchdown pass to
Jajuan Hays for the score.
Montclair State, which accumulated 386 yards of total offense, sealed the win with two interceptions in the final four minutes and another 28-yard field goal with :43 remaining.
For Rowan, Husni was 9-of-17 for 106 yards and WR
John Maldonado had five receptions for 58 yards.
The Profs (1-6; 1-3 NJAC) will host Christopher Newport on Saturday, November 6 in the final home game of the year at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium.
