NJAC Tournament Bracket
UNION, NJ- The Rowan University baseball team shut out William Paterson University, 7-0 in the second round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament on Friday at Kean University.
The top-seeded Profs are 30-9 overall, while the fifth-seeded Pioneers have a 25-15 record. Rowan's next contest is on Saturday and will be determined after today's games five and six are completed.
First baseman
Anthony Harrold (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and catcher
Steven Hewa (sr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) totaled two hits and three runs batted in (RBI) apiece for the Brown and Gold. Harrold had a double. Designated hitter
Mitch Walker (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) produced two hits, two runs and a RBI. Center fielder
Matt Woods (sr. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) chipped in a double and scored three times.
Right-hander
Danny Serreino (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) earned the win (5-2), pitching seven innings, striking out 12 batters and allowing three hits. Right-hander
Jeremy Dyzenhaus (jr. Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) and left-hander
Shane Kubrak (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Paul IV) each threw one inning and gave up one hit. Kubrak posted two strikeouts.
For the Pioneers, center fielder Steven DiGirolamo (so. Dumont, NJ/Dumont), catcher Steven Yelin (so. River Edge, NJ/River Dell Reg.), right fielder Danny Carter (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield), third baseman Carlos Perez (jr. Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne) and shortstop Greg Cuevas (so. West New York, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) all ended with one hit. Righty Eric Rosenberg (sr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) suffered the loss (5-3), hurling 5.1 innings and allowing five hits, five runs and three earned.
The Profs took an early, 2-0 lead in the first inning. Shortstop
Dillon Mendel (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) reached on a William Paterson error, followed by back-to-back walks from Woods and Walker to load the bases. Hewa drove in two runs with a single up the middle. The Brown and Gold extended its advantage to 4-0 in the fifth inning. Woods opened with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a single through the right side by Walker. Harrold plated both runners when he smashed a double to right field.
Rowan kept the momentum going in the sixth frame as it added three runs to lead, 7-0. With runners on first and second, Walker singled up the middle to score Mendel. Woods crossed home on the next at-bat when Harrold singled through the left side. Hewa knocked in the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly right field.
