Softball Wins Region Title With 7-6 Victory In 14 Innings Against MIT

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Rowan University softball team won the NCAA Cambridge Regional title with a 7-6 victory in 14 innings over Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Monday.
 
In the game prior, MIT defeated Rowan, 5-3 to force the if necessary game in the double elimination tournament.  Rowan (33-13) plays Eastern Connecticut State University (32-11) in the Super Regional on Friday-Saturday, May 17-18.  The host school will be determined by the NCAA.  The eight super regional champions will play for the national title on Thursday-Tuesday, May 23-28 at Suddenlink Field in Tyler, TX. 
 
Shortstop Carly Anderson (sr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) drove in first baseman Mackenzie Short (jr. Denton, MD/North Caroline) with a single up the middle for the winning run.  With one out, Short reached first with a base hit and went to second on a sac bunt by center fielder Kristina Mueller (sr. Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge).
 
In the bottom of the 14th, the Profs recorded a double play with a fly out to left field then a throw to home.  The game ended with a ground out to Anderson. Right-hander Jesse DeDomenico (jr. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) was the winning pitcher in relief.  She (19-7) threw 8.1 innings, scattered six hits and did not give up any runs.  DeDomenico also had three hits, a double and one run.  She was named the Most Outstanding Player of the regional. 
 
Anderson ended the game with two hits.  Designated player Kelly Duffy (so. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) contributed with three hits, a triple, one RBI and two runs. Catcher Christina Guarino (so. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) had two RBIs while second baseman Sonia Sharma (so. Mahwah, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) totaled two hits, a double and one RBI.  Left fielder Morgan Zane (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick), Anderson and Guarino were members of the Regional All-Tournament Team.
 
For the Engineers, center fielder Julia Chatterjee (fr. Hinsdale, IL/Hinsdale Central) produced three RBIs and one hit. Shortstop Madi Pickett (jr. Santa Barbara, CA/Dos Pueblos) compiled three hits and one run.  Right fielder Sarah Von Ahn (jr. West Linn, OR/West Linn) and designated player Claire Wichman (fr. Omaha, NE/Elkhorn) had one hit and one RBI apiece  Righty Colleen Campbell (so. Snoqualmie, WA/Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) suffered the loss (11-5) on the mound.
 
In the first game, MIT scored four runs in the sixth inning to lead 4-3.  Von Ahn recorded a three-run homer to center field.  Left fielder Sierra Rosenzweig (jr. Anchorage, AK/East Anchorage) scored on an error.  The Engineers had one more run in the seventh.  Second baseman Phoebe Li (so. Morganville, NJ/High Technology) walked with the bases loaded, scoring Pickett.

Rowan's three runs came in the first inning. Zane drove in two runs with a double to right center.  She crossed home plate on Guarino's base hit.
 
Zane finished the game with two hits, two RBIs and one run. DeDomenico added two hits and one run. Third baseman Cassandra Gerard (sr. Wayne Valley, NJ/Wayne) chipped in with one hit and one run.
 
Rowan was an at-large selection to the national tournament.  It is the Profs' 27th appearance and ninth straight in the NCAA postseason.
