GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat New Paltz, 7-2.
The Profs have a 13-5 record, while the Hawks are 7-9 overall.
Designated hitter
Mitch Walker (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) totaled three hits, two doubles and one run for Rowan. Shortstop
Dillon Mendel (sr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) followed with two hits and three runs batted in (RBI). Left fielder
Dan Shane (sr. Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) crossed home plate three times and added a double.
Right-hander
Jeremy Dyzenhaus (jr. Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) pitched 6.2 innings, allowing two hits and striking out six. Righty
Zach Listro (jr. Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) earned the win (1-1) facing one batter in the seventh. Right-hander
Andrew Cartier (sr. Estell Manor, NJ/Buena Reg.) threw the ninth and fanned two batters.
For New Paltz, center fielder David Juechter (so. Nyack, NY/Perkiomen) and designated hitter Dean Stazler (so. Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) recorded two hits apiece. Stazler had a RBI. Shortstop Ryan Frost (sr. Beacon, NY/Beacon) contributed one hit and a homer and scored once. Righty Bill Moeller (fr. Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) suffered the loss, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits and three runs and striking out five batters.
The Profs trailed early in the contest as the Hawks scored a run in each of the first two innings. Stazler had a RBI single and Frost blasted a home run. The Brown and Gold cut the deficit to 2-1 when right fielder
Eric Schorr (jr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) advanced Harrold home on a ground out in the second.
Rowan tied the game in the third on a Mendel sacrifice fly that plated Shane. The Profs took the lead in the seventh when Shane tagged up on a Kokos' sacrifice fly and beat the throw to home plate.
The Brown and Gold put the game out of reach after it scored four runs in the eighth for a 7-2 advantage. Walker opened with a double and advanced to third on a sac bunt. Walker then came home on a wild pitch. After back-to-back walks, Woods hit a RBI double to bring in one run. Rowan drove in the last two scores of the rally on a Mendel single up the middle.
The baseball team travels to New Jersey City University on Thursday, April 4 at 3:30 p.m.
