GLASSBORO, NJ –
John Maldonado caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from
Mike Husni with 28 seconds to play to cap a 21-point rally by Rowan as the Profs defeated TCNJ, 24-20, in the season finale at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium.
Rowan trailed 20-3 at the start of the fourth quarter and started the comeback when
Nick Grosso hauled in a 33-yard pass from Husni at 12:54.
Nick Mainiero turned a swing pass into a 70-yard touchdown for the first of his career at 10:33.
The teams battled the rest of the quarter, with each coming up with big defensive stops. The Profs held TCNJ into a three-and-out, pinning the Lions back to their own 25 and forcing a punt. Rowan started the winning drive on their own 19, but two completions to Mainiero and two runs by
Messiah Divine and Husni moved the Profs to the TCNJ 35. Husni then ran for 12 yards and Divine picked up eight to get it to the TCNJ 15, setting up the pass to Maldonado in the left corner of the end zone for the winning score.
TCNJ got the ball back with 28 seconds left to try for the win but on third down,
Kameron Kennedy intercepted the pass at the Rowan 15 and ran out the clock.
Husni passed for 23-for-32 for a career-best 376 yards and three touchdowns. Divine had 115 yards rushing on 22 carries, while Maldonado had nine catches for 142 yards. Mainiero caught three passes for 102 yards and
Nick Grosso had five catches for 76 yards.
"That showed a lot of heart. This team never gave up all year long. They fought through a lot of adversity, played four ranked teams. Their belief in one another and their belief in what we do and today you saw some guys step up. Elijah (Rehm) went down and
Nick Mainiero jumped in. It was just a gutsy performance from a lot of great young men," said head coach Jay Acccorsi. "
Mike Husni played probably one of his best games of the year.... he was spectacular."
Rowan ends its season with a 4-6 record and a 4-3 mark in the NJAC, while TCNJ finishes 2-8 and 2-5 in the conference.
