FROSTBURG, MD – The Rowan University football team dropped its first contest on the season, falling to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent No. 6 Frostburg State University, 34-7.
The Bobcats hold a 3-0 (2-0 NJAC) record and the Profs post a 3-1 (2-1 NJAC) mark.
Frostburg State got on the board first in the opening quarter, when quarterback Connor Cox (sr. Davidson, MD/South River) hit wide receiver Malik Morris (jr. Carney, MD/Dunbar) on a 68-yard pass to take a 6-0 lead. After Rowan went three-and-out, the Bobcats regained possession. After two run plays, defensive back
Travelle Curry (sr. Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech.) intercepted Cox and returned the ball to the 40-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback
Riley Giles (so. Deptford, NJ/Deptford) connected with wide receiver
Elijah Rehm (jr. Clayton, NJ/Clayton) on a 60-yard touchdown pass, to take a 7-6 lead.
The Bobcats scored 14 unanswered points in the second quarter to build a 20-7 advantage. Cox hit wide receiver Sergio Andino (sr. Pasadena, MD/Northeast) with a 14-yard strike for the first score, followed by a blocked punt that Frostburg State recovered in the end zone. Rowan got pinned on its one-yard line for the final drive of the second quarter and could not move the ball up the field as the score remained the same heading into halftime.
The Brown and Gold stumbled in the third quarter, when Frostburg State scored on its opening drive to pull away, 27-7. Cox scored on a two-yard run. Rowan battled back but was unsuccessful finding the end zone during the second half. The Bobcats punched in an additional touchdown late in the fourth quarter to set the final score at 34-7. Frostburg State scored 34 points using 441-yards of total offense, while holding Rowan to 166-yards. Giles finished the game completing 11 of 18 for 132-yards and one touchdown. Rehm caught four passes for 72-yards and one score, while wide receiver
Kazmere Sturgis (fr. Blackwood, NJ/Washington Twp.) recorded two catches for 39-yards.
The Profs' defense was led by defensive end
David Gajderowicz (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) who racked up 15 tackles, seven solo and eight assisted and two and a half sacks. Linebacker
Godwin Asamoah (sr. Edison, NJ/Edison) amassed 13 tackles, while linebacker
Jayson Gonzalez (sr. Roselle Park, NJ/Roselle Park) had 11.
For the Bobcats, Cox threw for 257 yards on 15 of 21 attempts and two touchdowns. Running back Jamaal Morant (sr. Baltimore, MD/Milford Mill) rushed for 101 yards on 22 attempts, while running back Malcolm Facey (so. Randallstown, MD/Western Tech.) ran for 38. Linebacker Wayne Palmer (jr. Upper Marlboro, MD/Wise) recorded 10 stops and linebacker Dre'Quan Reed (sr. Columbia, MD/Hammond) totaled eight tackles.
The Rowan football team returns home, as it hosts Christopher Newport University on Saturday, Sept. 29, with the game set to start at 6 p.m.
