Case Western Reserve Softball Scores Winning Run In Bottom Of The Eighth For 2-1 Victory Over Rowan

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The Case Western Reserve University softball team scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 2-1 victory over Rowan University on Friday night on the second day at the NCAA Championship Tournament.

Rain delayed the start of Friday's games and only two of the four contests scheduled were played.  It was the Profs' second loss of the double elimination tournament. They end the season with a 39-13-1 overall record.  Case Western Reserve (38-11) will face the loser of the Virginia Wesleyan College and Luther College game on Saturday night.

In the other elimination game, Ithaca College came back to win 3-2 over Massachusetts Institute of Technology in eight innings. The national championship tournament continues Saturday-Tuesday, May 26-29 at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium.

With two outs in the eighth, second baseman Maren Waldner (sr. Redondo Beach, CA/Chadwick) walked and third baseman Sarah Miller (fr. Lorain, OH/Marion L. Steele) was hit by a pitch.  First baseman Grace Tritchler (sr. San Antonio, TX/Winston Churchill) reached base on an error and Waldner scored the winning run.

Right-hander Illissa Hamilton (so. S. Abington Twp., PA/Scranton Preparatory School) went the distance in the circle for the win. She (21-7) scattered five hits and allowed one earned run.  Righty Jesse DeDomenico (so. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) suffered the loss (23-9).

The Spartans got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth.  Catcher Dusstyn Reynolds (fr. Wooster, OH/Wooster) crossed the plate on left fielder Arisa Cleaveland's (fr. Long Beach, CA/Woodrow Wilson) ground out. Reynolds had produced a double.

Designated player Kelly Duffy (fr. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) tied the score with a solo home run to left center in the sixth. It was only her second homer of her career.  Her first one came in Rowan's opening round game versus Illinois Wesleyan University.

DeDomenico led the Profs at the plate with three hits in four at bats and a double.  Catcher Christina Guarino (fr. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) had a double. Shortstop Nicole Doyle (jr. Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon) and Miller each hit a double for Case Western Reserve.

Rowan earned an automatic bid to the national tournament as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Champion.  It was the Profs' 26thappearance and eighth straight in the NCAA postseason.  Rowan has advanced to the national finals six times and finished tied for third in 2016 and fourth in 1994 and 1993.
