GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team captured the NCAA Super Regional title with two wins over Moravian College, 2-1 and 2-1 on Sunday.
The Profs (39-11-1) advance to the NCAA Championship Tournament that is scheduled for Thursday-Tuesday, May 24-29 at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, OK.
Rowan pitcher
Lauren Shannon (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) was named the Super Regional Most Outstanding Pitcher while shortstop
Carly Anderson (jr. Nutley, NJ/Nutley) was selected the Most Outstanding Player. Moravian ended the year with a 36-8 record.
Shannon (14-2) was the winning pitcher in the second contest. She only gave up two hits and one earned run while striking out nine batters. Right-hander Amanda Carisone (sr. Neshanic Station, NJ/Somerville) took the loss (16-4).
Anderson totaled four hits in four at bats and scored one run. Right fielder
Morgan Smith (sr. Millsboro, DE/Sussex Central) contributed with three hits. Third baseman
Cassandra Gerard (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) chipped in with two hits, one RBI and one run. Second baseman
Sonia Sharma (fr. Mahwah, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) drove in one run.
Rowan was ahead 1-0 after the first inning. Anderson led off with a single and was on third after two ground outs. Gerard plated Anderson with a single. Shannon and the Profs held the Greyhounds to three at bats in each of the first five innings. In the sixth, Gerard started with a base hit to left field. Designated player
Kelly Duffy (fr. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) walked and was replaced by pinch runner
Madison Petroski (fr. Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.). The runners advanced on catcher
Christina Guarino's (fr. West Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) sacrifice bunt. Sharma knocked in Gerard with a hit.
Moravian threatened in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and the bases loaded, Shannon recorded her ninth strikeout and the final out was a fly ball to the outfield. The Greyhounds scored in the seventh. Catcher Janae Matos (sr. Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) led off with a single and pinch runner Ashley Gindle (jr. Aston, PA/Sun Valley) took over at first. Designated player Shannon Brogan (fr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) walked. Third baseman Madison Shaneberger (jr. Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) put the runners on second and third with a sac bunt. Gindle came home on first baseman Jean Markovic's (sr. Fountain Hill, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) sacrifice fly.
Righty
Jesse DeDomenico (so. East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) had the victory in the first game. She (23-7) scattered seven hits and allowed one earned run. DeDomenico collected six strikeouts and scored one run.
Anderson chipped in with one hit and one run. Duffy produced one hit and one RBI while Smith had one RBI. For Moravian, shortstop Maddisen Bieber (fr. Chalfont, PA/Central Bucks S.) was two-for-two at the plate. Center fielder Kat Spilman (jr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) and Markovic each posted a double. Markovic also crossed the plate one time. Right fielder Brooke Wehr (fr. Orefield, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) had a RBI.
Rowan scored its two runs in the third inning. Anderson singled and DeDomenico was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved a base on a passed ball. Smith registered a sacrifice fly, scoring Anderson. Duffy drove in DeDomenico with a single to left field.
The Greyhounds had the bases loaded in the fifth inning with two outs. DeDomenico recorded a strikeout for the third out and her sixth of the game. Moravian's run came in the seventh. Markovic doubled to lead off the inning. Bieber walked and pinch runner Jackie Marshall (sr. Drexell Hill, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) took over at first. Second baseman Kaela Kane (jr. Drexel Hill, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) had a sac bunt, which advanced the runners. Wehr grounded out to second base and Markovic scored.
Rowan received an automatic bid to the national tournament as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Champion. It is the Profs' 26
thappearance and eighth straight in the NCAA postseason.
