MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Rowan University football team fell to Montclair State University 28-14 in New Jersey Athletic Conference Action on Saturday.
The Profs are now 5-4 (4-4 NJAC), while the Red Hawks move to 7-2 (6-2 NJAC).
The Brown and Gold fell behind early in the opening quarter when the Montclair State took a 7-0 lead. Running back Kyle Phipps (so. Linden, NJ/Linden) scored on a one-yard touchdown run. The Red Hawks pulled ahead 14-0 when quarterback Ja'Quill Burch (so. Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) hit wide receiver Kason Campbell (jr. Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) on a 30-yard strike for a score.
The Profs fell behind in the second stanza when Burch threw a 13-yard completion to Mike Manzi-Lewis (jr. North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) for a touchdown to move the score to 21-0. Montclair State added a score late in the second to set the score at 28-0 heading into halftime.
The Rowan offense stepped up in the second half. The Brown and Gold scored in the fourth quarter on a 73-yard bomb to wide receiver
Elijah Rehm (jr. Clayton, NJ/Clayton) to cut the deficit to 28-6. The Profs doubled up on the next drive when defensive back
Nate Lanier (jr. Sicklerville, NJ/Woodbridge) picked off a 42-yard touchdown to set the score at 28-14. The Profs could not find the end zone for the remainder of the game as they lost, 28-14.
Quarterback
Nick Couzzi (fr. Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) completed 10 for 24 passes for 95-yards, while quarterback
Riley Giles (so. Deptford, NJ/Deptford Twp.) threw for 84-yards and one score. Rehm reeled in 104-yards on five catches and one touchdown.
Safety
Malachi Winters (so. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) recorded nine tackles, seven solo and two assisted and linebacker
Chris Henchy (sr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) stopped seven.
The Rowan football team has its last contest on the season when it faces Kean University on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.
