Misericordia Women's Soccer Wins 3-1 Over Rowan In NCAA First Round

BALTIMORE, MD – The Misericordia University women's soccer team won 3-1 over Rowan University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Saturday night.
 
Misericordia (16-2-1) advances to the second round on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. against host Johns Hopkins University (18-2).  The Blue Jays defeated Cabrini University, 3-1 in the first round.  Rowan ends the season with a 13-4-2 record.  The Profs received an at-large bid to the national tournament.  It was their 14thappearance overall and fourth straight.
 
Forward Ashley Edgell (sr. Seaville, NJ/Ocean City) started the scoring at 41:16.  Rowan back Casey Lubonski almost tied the score as time experience but Misericordia goalie Alexi Benedetto (so. Hauppauge, NY/Happauge) came up with a big stop.  The Profs edged the Cougars in shots 6-5 in the first half.
 
Misericordia hit the back of the net again (60:16).  Edgell recorded her second marker with an assist from midfielder Kaylee Sturans (fr. Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington).  Midfielder Jeanna Orfanos (jr. Floral Park, NY/Floral Park) scored less than four minutes later.  She had a pass from midfielder Kendall Pearage (fr. Bear Creek, PA/Coughlin). 
 
Rowan's goal came at the 82ndminute.  Back Arianna Durling (so. Hamilton, NJ/Sterling) blasted a shot from outside the box that went into the left side of the net.  It was her first goal of her collegiate career.      
 
Benedetto ended the game with five saves.  Goalie Shelby Money (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) had two saves for Rowan.
