Box Score DOVER, DE – The #21/23 Rowan University football team dropped a 38-25 decision at #4/4 Wesley College on Saturday afternoon.
The Profs have an overall record of 5-2 and they are 4-2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Wolverines improve to 7-0 and 6-0 in the conference.
Wesley quarterback Joe Callahan (sr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) threw for 399 yards (37-50) and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball six times for 18 yards. Running back Jamar Baynard (jr. Townsend, DE/Middletown) rushed 28 times for 123 yards and three TDs and he made seven catches for 46 yards. Wide receiver Bryce Shade (jr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek) caught 12 passes for 159 yards. Tight end Kyle George (sr. Willingboro, NJ/Willingboro) had 96 yards on 10 catches. Wideout Alex Kemp (fr. Magnolia, DE/Caesar Rodney) and tight end Tory Robinson (jr. Farmingdale, NJ/Howell) each had a score.
Defensive back Craig Pettit (sr. Clifton Heights, PA/Upper Darby) made 11 stops and had one interception and two pass break-ups. Linebacker Samer Manna (so. Germantown, MD/Northeast) tallied 10 tackles, including two for a loss (4 yards) and recovered a fumble. Defensive back James Williamson (sr. Baltimore, MD/New Town) collected eight tackles, including three for a loss (10 yards) and forced two fumbles. Defensive back Andre Connally (jr. Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink) added six tackles and two interceptions.
For Rowan, quarterback
Dante Pinckney (so. Lawnside, NJ/Haddon Heights) completed 15 passes in 29 attempts for 224 yards and one TD. Running back
Withler Marcelin (sr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp) carried the ball 28 times for 163 yards and one score. Wide receiver
Russ Forchion (jr. Clementon, NJ/Hammonton) collected 10 catches for 161 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver
Jamel Smith (so. Pine Hill, NJ/New Egypt) returned a free kick, 83 yards for a TD.
Linebacker
Darren Dungee (sr. Morristown, NJ/Morristown) made 12 tackles. Defensive backs
Shaquille Lee (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) and
Bobby Barbieri (jr. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) contributed with 11 and 10 tackles respectively.
Wesley took a 7-0 lead when Callahan connected with Kemp for a 44-yard touchdown at the 7:18 mark of the first quarter. The drive went 74 yards in six plays. Defensive lineman
Sebastian Ljoka (sr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) tackled Callahan in the end zone with 2:43 on the clock for a safety. Rowan then went out in the front on the first play of its next possession as Pinckney hit Forchion for a 61-yard score and a 9-7 advantage (2:27).
With 13:52 remaining in the second, Robinson caught a six-yard pass from Callahan, capping the 12-play, 78-yard drive and making the score 14-9.
In the third, kicker Eric Speidel (sr. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrenceville Prep) extended the Wolverines lead to 17-9 on a 24-yard field goal. Baynard stretched the advantage to 24-9 (8:02) with a two-yard touchdown run. The score was set-up by a Profs' fumble that was recovered by Manna and returned to the seven-yard line. Marcelin trimmed the deficit to 24-16 (6:55) on a two-yard score. The big play of the drive was a 65-yard completion to Forchion. Wesley responded on its next possession, marching 75-yards in 11 plays and scoring on a one-yard run by Baynard with 3:38 to play. The contest went into the fourth quarter with Wesley ahead 31-16.
Rowan got its second safety of the game when Wesley fumbled the ball into its own end zone after an interception at the 9:07 mark. Smith took the free kick 83 yards for a touchdown, cutting the Wesley advantage to 31-25 with 8:52 on the clock. The Wolverines got the ball back after an interception in Rowan territory. Wesley put the game out of reach, ending a five-play 33-yard drive with a 14-yard TD run by Baynard (1:42).
Next, Rowan hosts Frostburg State University on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m.
