Box Score BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins University defeated Rowan University, 24-16 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship Tournament on Saturday.
 
The Profs finish the season with a record of 7-4. The Blue Jays (11-0) advance to the second round and face Hobart College on Saturday, November 29 at noon. Hobart won over Ithaca College, 22-15 in the first round. The location of the game will be determined on Sunday.
 
Rowan running back #Withler Marcelin# (jr. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) rushed 27 times for 136 yards. He broke the single season record (1,438) for rushing yards, which he set last year with 1,447. Quarterback #Bill McCarty# (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) completed 24 passes in 44 attempts for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver #Russ Forchion# (jr. Clementon, NJ/Hammonton) recorded a career-high 15 catches for 100 yards and one touchdown.
 
Defensive lineman #Chris Alvarez# (sr. Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park), cornerback #Jared Sanchez# (so. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) and linebacker #Darren Dungee# (jr. Morristown, NJ/Morristown) each tallied nine tackles. Alvarez also had two tackles for a loss (9 yards), while Sanchez recovered a fumble and had an interception. Linebackers #Vinny Simone# (sr. Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) and #John Barillo# (fr. Ventnor, NJ/St. Augustine Prep), cornerback #Eddie Davis# (jr. Camden, NJ/Camden) and safety #Kurt Kingett# (gr. Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) produced seven tackles apiece.
 
Johns Hopkins quarterback Braden Anderson (sr. Great Falls, VA/Langley) threw for 286 yards (27-36) and three touchdowns. He also ran the ball seven times for 24 yards. Running back Brandon Cherry (jr. Parkville, MD/Boys' Latin) had 52 yards on 13 carries. Wideout Quinn Donaldson (so. Bowling Green, OH/Bowling Green) had seven receptions for 105 yards and two TDs. Wide receiver Bradley Munday (so. Chagrin Falls, OH/Chagrin Falls) totaled 11 catches for 77 yards.
 
Defensive linemen Michael Longo (sr. Scarsdale, NY/Iona Prep) and Lance Hammond (fr. Springfield, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary) each collected seven stops. Longo registered 1.5 sacks (12 yards) and 1.5 tackles for a loss (12 yards).
 
Johns Hopkins scored the first points of the game on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Anderson to Donaldson with 9:48 to play in the first quarter. The four play, 48-yard drive was setup by a Rowan fumble at its own 48-yard-line. Anderson had three completions for 47 yards on the drive. Simone forced a fumble at the Profs' one-yard-line that was recovered by Barillo in the end zone at the 2:11 mark. The Profs then went three-and-out and on the first play of the Blue Jays' ensuing drive, wide receiver Ryan Finkel (jr. Oradell, NJ/Bergen Catholic) caught a 48-yard touchdown pass (0:31).
 
Rowan got on the scoreboard with 11:51 remaining in the second as Forchion found his way into the end zone with a 12-yard catch. The drive was five plays and encompassed 51 yards. Marcelin ran the ball three times for 39 yards on the drive. Safety #Rashad Adams# (jr. Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy Vo-Tech) then forced a fumble at Rowan's 14-yard-line that was recovered by Sanchez. The Profs drove 77 yards in 12 plays, capped off by a 26-yard field goal by kicker #Tyler Knighton# (fr. Gibbsboro, NJ/Paulsboro). The score cut the deficit to 14-10 (2:13) at the half.
 
The Blue Jays took the opening drive of the third quarter 65 yards in 10 plays, ending with an eight-yard touchdown reception by Donaldson for a 21-10 lead (11:16). Johns Hopkins kicker Jamie Sullivan (fr. Lake Sherwood, CA/Oaks Christian) tacked on a 39-yard field goal with 56 seconds remaining. The drive was 10 plays and traveled 64 yards.
 
Wide receiver #Warren Oliver# (sr. Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) made a 10-yard touchdown reception with 51 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The point after attempt was blocked. The drive was six plays and went 35 yards with McCarty passing for all 35 yards.
