Football Falls to Mary Hardin-Baylor, 59-8 In Second Round of NCAA Division III Championship Tournament

Box Score BELTON, TX – Rowan University had its 2013 season end on Saturday in a 59-8 loss at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in the second round in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
 
Rowan finished with a 9-3 record, while Mary Hardin-Baylor remains unbeaten at 12-0. The Crusaders will move on to the quarterfinals, where they will face St. John Fisher College on December 7. St. John Fisher defeated Hobart College, 27-6 in a second round game.
 
Running back Withler Marcelin (so. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) ran the ball 19 times for 41 yards and one touchdown. Running back Khalil Pierce (fr. Neptune, NJ/Timber Creek) had 15 carries for 43 yards. Marcelin and Pierce each made three catches for 17 yards. Quarterback Bill McCarty (so. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) was 9 of 15 for 105 yards.
 
Defensive lineman Chris Alvarez (jr. Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) had a team-high 13 tackles, including two for a loss (-6 yards). Linebacker Tyler Jenkins (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) recorded 12 tackles. Linebacker Darren Dungee (so. Morristown, NJ/Morristown) tallied seven tackles.
 
"We lost to a very good team today," said Rowan head coach Jay Accorsi. "I am proud of our guys and the season that we had. We won a conference championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. We had a great group of seniors and the program will miss them."
 
For Mary Hardin-Baylor, quarterback Zach Anderson (so. Odem, TX/Odem) completed 12 passes in 18 attempts for 168 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran the ball 13 times for 116 yards. Running back Elijah Hudson (sr. Albany, TX/Albany) carried the ball 23 times for 136 yards and one touchdown. Wideout Kamray Runnels (jr. Edna, TX/Edna) caught three passes for 54 yards, while running back Keith Reineke (so. McGregor, TX/McGregor) had five catches for 36 yards and one touchdown. Safety Cody Jones (sr. Hughes Springs, TX/Hughes Springs) led the Crusaders with 10 tackles and he returned an interception and a punt for touchdowns. Linebackers Deshon Kinsey (jr. Woodway, TX/Mart) and Andy McAteer (sr. Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch) each had nine tackles.
 
On the first drive of the game, Marcelin scored on a four-yard run for a 6-0 lead at the 11:17 mark. The point after attempt was blocked. The drive was set up by a 42-yard kickoff return by running back Matt Dortch (sr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley). Mary Hardin-Baylor took a 7-6 lead with 3:28 to play in the first quarter as Hudson ran the ball into the end zone from seven yards out. With 53-seconds left, Anderson hit wide receiver Wykeyhe Walker (fr. San Antonio, TX/Cole) for a 41-yard touchdown and a 14-6 Crusader lead.
 
A 13-yard shovel pass from Anderson to running back Michael Carpenter (so. Waco, TX/Boaqueville) extended the Crusaders advantage to 21-6 at 10:37 in the second quarter. Carpenter then ran the ball in from six yards out to make the score 28-6 with 5:13 on the clock. Reineke caught a six yard touchdown pass at 16-seconds to give the Crusaders a 35-6 lead going into halftime. The drive was set-up after Jones returned an interception 51 yards.
 
Defensive back Rashad Adams (so. Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy Vo-Tech) blocked a punt into the end zone at 10:04 of the third quarter for a safety, making the score 35-8. A 23-yard field goal by kicker Chad Peevey (sr. Bryan, TX/St. Joseph) gave UMHB a 38-8 lead with 59-seconds remaining in the third.
 
Running back Glen Gilliam (sr. Waller, TX/Waller) recovered a muffed punt in the end zone for a touchdown at 14:04 in the fourth and the score was 45-8. Jones returned a punt 71 yards for a touchdown and a 52-8 lead at the 12:16 mark. A 37-yard touchdown run by quarterback Brian Gallagher (sr. Fort Worth, TX/Paschal) gave the Crusaders a 59-8 advantage with 10:11 on the clock.
