ITHACA, NY – The Rowan University women's soccer team won 1-0 over Skidmore College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Saturday.
Forward Jess Durnian (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) scored the game-winner at 21:53. She hit the bottom left side of the net with a pass from midfielder Dayna Sakalsky (sr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central).
Rowan (17-3) plays host Ithaca College (17-2) in the second round on Sunday, November 17 at 1:30 p.m. The Bombers shut out Penn State Behrend, 3-0 in the first round.
Skidmore totaled 14 shots while Rowan took eight. Goalkeeper Carleigh Trivino (fr. Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) stopped eight shots for her seventh shutout on the season. For the Thoroughbreds, goalie Gab Lawrence (sr. Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) made two saves.
The second round winner moves on to the sectionals on Friday and Saturday, November 22 and 23 or Saturday and Sunday, November 23 and 24. The national semifinals and final are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, December 6 and December 7 at the Blossom Soccer Complex in San Antonio, TX.
Skidmore ends the season with a 12-4-2 record. It was the Thoroughbreds' sixth appearance in the national tournament. This is Ithaca's 24th trip and 11th consecutive to the NCAA Championship Tournament. The Bombers have won the national title twice (1990, 1991), finished second once (1989) and came in third three times (1988, 1998, 2011).
The NCAA Championship Tournament consists of 64 teams. There are 43 conferences that received automatic qualifiers, one team from Pool B and 20 schools from Pool C.
