GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s soccer team upset Montclair State University, 2-0 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday. It was Montclair’s first loss of the season.
Rowan improves to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the NJAC. Montclair State has an 11-1-1 record with a 4-1 conference mark. The Red Hawks are ranked 19th in the nation and fourth in the South Atlantic Region. The Profs are tied for eighth in the region.
After a scoreless first half, Rowan was able to net two goals in the remaining 45 minutes. Midfielder Morgan Muracco (sr. Washington Twp./Paul VI) blasted a shot from the top of the box over the head of the goalkeeper at 56:09. Forward Erika Suhl (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) picked up the assist.
At 71:44, forward Dayna Sakalsky (jr. Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) was fouled inside the box. Midfielder Nina Fragoso (sr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) took the penalty kick and capitalized to put the Profs ahead, 2-0.
Montclair took 15 shots and Rowan had 10. Profs’ goalkeeper Maria Dorris (sr. Mantua, NJ/Clearview Reg.) made five saves and recorded her seventh shutout. Red Hawks’ goalkeeper Gina Policastro (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) stopped three shots.
