CORTLAND, NY – Quarterback Chris Rose’s 33 yard touchdown pass with 1:26 remaining gave SUNY Cortland a 24-21 win over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Dragons trailed 21-17 with 1:52 left in the fourth quarter. Wide receiver DJ Spencer (fr. Buffalo, NJ/Cleveland Hill) hauled in the game-winning touchdown. In the drive, Rose (sr. Victor, NY/Victor) had three completions in three attempts for 63 yards. On the ensuing possession, Rowan took the ball down to the Cortland 37 yard line but safety Andre Green (fr. Philadelphia, NY/Indian River) intercepted a pass with 21 seconds on the clock to seal the victory.
Cortland improves to 6-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference. Rowan, ranked 22nd in the American Football Coaches Association Poll, has a 5-2 record with a 4-1 NJAC mark. Rose completed 32 of 53 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns. Wideout Kordel McInnis (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) made six grabs for 89 yards and two touchdowns. Spencer added four catches for 76 yard. Tailback Dorian Myles (sr. Lackawanna, NY/Hamburg) carried the ball 16 times for 56 yards. He also had nine receptions for 55 yards. Wide receivers Mike Humphrey (sr. Le Roy, NY/Le Roy) and Jack Delahunty (sr. East Northport, NY/Northport) contributed with 44 yards apiece. Kicker Mike DeBole (jr. Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) converted three of three PATs and nailed a 28 yard field goal.
Linebacker Chris Bright (sr. East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) led the defense with nine tackles (eight solo, one assisted), two tackles for a loss (-2 yards) and one pass breakup. Cornerback Pete Furey (sr. Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and Green each had seven stops. Green also had one tackle for a loss (-4 yards), one fumble recovery and one interception. Cornerback Andrew Tolosi (so. Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) intercepted one pass. Linebacker Jesse Scanna (so. Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) and defensive end Vaughn Labor (sr. Norwich, NY/Norwich) both forced a fumble. Defensive end Gabe Ostrow (jr. Nanuet, NY/Nanuet) chipped in with two sacks (-9 yards) and one fumble recovery.
For Rowan, quarterback Louie Bianchini (sr. West Long Branch, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) had 15 completions in 27 attempts for 306 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Matt Dortch (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) collected 62 yards on 17 touches. Running back Keith Corcoran (sr. Atlantic City, NJ/St. Joseph (Hammonton)) followed with 46 yards and one touchdown on six carries. Wideout Warren Oliver (jr. Beverly, NJ/Palymyra) registered seven receptions for 94 yards. Wide receiver Ed Eisenhart (so. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) caught two balls for 66 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Dan Reed (sr. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) had a 76 yard touchdown grab.
Safety Casey Dillon (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) made a game-high 10 tackles (seven solo, three assisted). Linebacker Darren Dungee (fr. Morristown, NJ/Morristown) posted nine stops (eight solo, one assisted) and one tackle for a loss (-3 yards). Linebackers Patrick Ruley (sr. Margate, NJ/Atlantic City) and Dominic Caruso (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) recorded six tackles apiece. Ruley had two tackles for a loss (-4 yards) and Caruso had one (-1 yard). Cornerback Frank Rubino (sr. Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) had one interception.
Rowan took a 7-0 lead at 4:47 in the first quarter on a 62 yard touchdown reception by Eisenhart. Rowan started on its 30 yard line. Bianchini had an eight yard rush then found Eisenhart on the second play of the drive.
Cortland tied the game (7-7) at 14:47 in the second quarter. Rose threw a 20 yard touchdown toss to McInnis. The Red Dragons took over on the Profs’ 35 yard line after Scanna forced a fumble and Ostrow recovered it. Myles had two carries for 15 yards. The Profs answered with a 24 yard touchdown run by Corcoran at 12:33 for a 14-7 advantage. In the drive, Bianchini completed three passes in three attempts for 46 yards.
At 8:57 in the third period, McInnis had a 14 yard touchdown catch that tied the score at 14. Cortland took over at the Rowan 34 yard line after Green recovered a fumbled punt return. Myles had a 12 yard rush and Rose threw for 21 yards with two completions in two attempts. At 3:02, DeBole’s 28 yard field goal put the Red Dragons on top, 17-14. The drive covered 11 plays and 61 yards. Rose went four for six for 55 yards. Bianchini completed a 76 yard touchdown pass to Reed with 1:52 remaining in the fourth to put Rowan ahead, 21-17.
